The Optimate is a good maintenance charger but that does not mean it can be connected and forgotten about. You should check periodically that the led shows full charge or maintenance charge. If you connect it to the frame any electrical corrosion which can occur in any of the connections back to negative may interrupt the charging cycle and lead to a flat battery. This may be helpful if you check regularly that it is still charging and help you to find any corrosion which may happen during the lay-off period. Connecting to the negative terminal of the battery will only ensure that the battery itself is O.K. You pays your money and takes your choice but I always start the bike once a week to keep both the battery in full state and the other connecions to ancilliary parts (lights, horn, sidestand switch, clutch switch etc.) are in working order.
This start procedure also ensures a good coating of oil on the working parts of the engine. Don't forget to move the bike to relieve pressure on one small section of the tyres to avoid flat spots.

Solar panel?
Anyone tried a solar panel? My brother just got one and put it on the garage roof. Wondered if they are any good before I got one.
