chain tensioner/guide

hello chaps, has anybody had any problems with the chain tensioner/guide just behind the front sprocket ,mines a 07 xtx with 2000 miles and mine has fell t bits
now i bought a new one and when i tried t fit it ,it wouldntgo straight on,the gap between where the bolt goes in and the rubber chain guide wasnt big enough,so i got my son t sit on the bike which made the gap bigger and then fitted it,went for atest ride and after about 3 miles the new one fell t bits.
the tensioner is made up of 3 parts ,small metal inner tube, white plastic sleeve and like a spongy ring, ive had raising links fitted from 700 miles and just wondrin whether the extra height is reducing the gap between the tensioner and the rubber chain guide making the chain press harder on the tensioner and breaking it,ive also stiffened my rear shock a couple of notches about 100 miles ago (fat *******) any ideas !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sorry kev,the way ive described it makes it abit confusing ,if your looking at the nearside of the bike, look at the heelplate and directly underneath there is a bolt with the tensioner/roller fitted just under the chain, this is the tensioner im on about

sorry no photos

I think its to do with the chain tension and your raiser links. I had a similar problem with my XT660R when i fitted my raiser links but i just found that the chain had to either be slackish or tight. I think you have it tight which means its rubbing on the rollers too much.

Either that or is your roller rolling? If not you will need to strip it and grease it and place it all back on. When you turn the rear wheel get someone to look at it and the wee roller should be rolling freely with out stopping if the can is in contact with the roller.

Hope this helps

Had the same problem with my 2004 XT chain tensioner.
I have also risen the rear up as you and had the same problems.

Make sure that when you replace the tensioner+screw that the white/yellow roll moves freely with no obstructions and that the inner tube is oiled.
Also make sure the chain is not set too tight and you replace the inner white plastic tube in the right way.

One other thing regarding rear rising in combination with a much larger rear sprocket:
Due to the 48 sprocket i have fitted and the resulting greater amount of torque on the tensioner by doing wheelies, the tensioner on my bike has broken off completely only to leave a little metal edge at the place where it used to be.

still have to make an appointment to have a new one welded on. So be ware, it's not that strong...
