Bash Plate

I have been looking around for a load of things for the XT660R for when i finally get one and have seen alot of mixed reviews about bash plates and which to go for. I plan not to get a 2 into 1 exhaust so need a bash plate they will fit around the stock exhausts. Also when looking at the reviews alot of them say they also cover the water pump but does yours really?

At the moment i am sort of looking at the large touratech one as it is massive and seems to cover near all the engine but is expensive.

So what bash plate you got and how good is it? any pictures?

No pics yet

I've ordered, but not yet fitted, the large one at offtheroad.de. I'll post a pic when I get it.

I've ordered quite a lot of stuff and to be honest, I'm getting a bit miffed with my namesake at OTR. Called him for the third time last monday and he said there was a delay because of the painters holiday (this was in reference to the tanks). But he would send the whole thing either that day or the day after. He said I'd get a mail when the order was sent. Still haven't recieved a mail . Ordered the tanks, bashplate, windshield, crahsbars and hand protectors.

As for the bashplate covering the waterpump; it ofcourse doesn't cover it as in encasing it. But you can clearly see on the model photo that it extends out to the sides so much, that if you lay your bike down the bike will rest on the side of the bashplate, and not the waterpump. The small stock Yamaha skidplate only protects the exhaust pipes and leaves the rest of the engine ungaurded in a crash. But to be completely sure, you'll need engine crashbars. Bear in mind, that if you are getting a '07 model with the lambda probe, you'll need to either move the lambda or go with a 2in1 solution (which you are).

I'll ofcourse post pictures of the bike when I have it fully fitted. And also some detailed photos of each item. Plan to make a whole photoserie of me mounting the extra large tanks. I'm told it's rather hard to make it fit and work properly.

cheers for the quick reply

I have looked at the offtheroad bash plate and it seems good but as yet havent heard much about it ie reviews of any kind. ie how good is it, was it easy to fit, is it really designed properly to protect your bike for what you bought it for?

I am at the moment not thinking of putting on crash bars (i think like you Mcthor) as 1, some of the bash plates say you cant fit both and 2 cause if i get a good enough bash plate it should do both and 3 cost. This is the reason i would like a large bash plate to cover the water pump and like Mcthor said not to cover it while the bike is up right but when laid on its side, ie if i had fallen over the bash plate will be on the ground and the water pump will be protected.

I see offtheroad do a protector for the pump but it looks a bit point less more of a money making item really.

I have seen one person had the large TT bash plate and was wondering what he thinks of it? how long did it take him to recieve it? (heard TT has a big bad log of work) as its so big had any cooling probelms with the bike?

Read that most of the bash plates (bar the yamaha) are mostly made from 3-4mm thick aluminium that should protect the exhaust/engine from getting any heavy knocks or smashs. But then what wiegh are most of these bash plates? I know its not really gonna matter when fully loaded just a thought.

I got mine from www.kedo.de. It looks good, its thick enough and its quite cheap compared to otr. I dont have any complaints yet, it does its job well. One annoying thing is noise, aluminium plate rebounces engine and chain noise upwards right to your ears.

I have the TT one fitted to my XT and it took some very big hit's when off roading in Spain.
It saved the engine and water pump housing getting damaged that's for sure.

Steve, how long ago did you buy your sump guard? The pic on the Kedo website seems to have a slightly wider sump guard that gives the water pump more protection. I wonder if they have altered their design..?
