Bought an XTX with over 46,000 kms - worth opening engine/other service requiredd?
Glad to become part of this community!
I just put down deposit on a '08 XT600X with 46,000 kms on it. The bike looks and sounds like it's in good condition, the previous owner definitely didn't mind spending some money on it: It has USD forks, power commander, and a couple more mods. I test rode it already and didn't find any issues - it was running very well. However, because it is after all Vietnam, and things run a bit differently here, he doesn't have such thing as complete service history of the bike. The engine has never been opened as far as he knows. I've read somewhere on the forum that you might need to replace the rings after 50,000 kms. I don't really mess with bikes at all and leave all jobs to a mechanic here. All I want is a reliable machine and not having to worry about my bike breaking down in the middle of Vietnam while I'm on a trip. I'd rather be safe than sorry. Despite bike's good running condition, would you still have the engine opened up and checked/serviced? (Rings, pistons, etc.) I looked at the service manual but it doesn't really refer to many engine's integral parts. It also ends at 40k km. Are there any other things I should be concerned about to open up and inspect (& replace if needed)? Thanks and much appreciated! |

just too put your mind at ease the only thing ive needed to put in my engine so far is is oil and its now done 58,000 miles. and its been abused nearly every single one of them.
I replaced the clutch after towing a ktm 990 across the peak district....... offroad. but before that the clutch was fine. if it runs well and pulls well itll probably run forever

Oil and filter change would be my first 'job' on the bike..tbh its the first thing I do on any bike I buy irrespective of any history etc.
frequency is up to you..6 or 12 months dependent upon miles, conditions, riding styles etc |

Got 30k miles on my current one. Had another one here with 51k miles on it. Both unopened and fine.
These unstressed units seam to do well if serviced as required. Colin J

Thanks for the input guys! I'll probably just do without opening the engine for now.
I've bumped into several complaints about cush drive rubbers being fragile in this model, and even though we've already inspected them and they seem to be fine, I'll still have new one's made. Here in Vietnam they can apparently make very tough ones from a forklift's tire rubber. |

A simple and effective fix is to use inner tubes to pack the 'space'..

Hi!
Mine has 56700 km now and nothing is done to it except service and an extra oil/oil filter change every 3000 km. Probably not necessary with the extra oil change but feels good for me to do it so... I put on a Dominator 2-1 a few weeks ago and i guess i like the sound more than my neighbours do. Love the bike. |
