2010 XT660Z Rattle/Grinding noise at 5k RPM
Hi all.
My Tenere (new to me a week or so ago) is a 2010 with 32k miles on and a good service history. The other day, i noticed that in gears 1 and 2 a grinding/rattle appears at 5k rpm and then goes at 5200rpm. It also does the same when in neutral/clutch in and i just rev to 5k rpm. Then, again, stops at 5200rpm. Anyone have ideas about the cause? I've checked exhaust heat shield screws and the other usual suspects - but all sufficiently tight! I can provide a video if required. Thanks in advance. |

A video would be really helpful.
Where abouts is the noise? Left, right, upper or lower parts of the motor? |

Thanks. As requested here is a video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tn3KbGljmtk If i had to say, i would guess it is coming from the top of the engine. Hard to tell which side though. Not really heard when riding, doesn't happen in gears 3, 4 or 5. Can sort of hear in gears 1 and 2. |

That is a high frequency resonance and not engine related. Sounds like something thin and metallic to me? Screen, clocks, headlamp cowling and its subframe are notorious for resonance. Maybe bash plate? Have you an aluminium radiator guard fitted? I know you've checked the screws in the heat shield, but could be a loose exhaust clip/clamp or heat shield itself? Cable routing under the tank?
You going to have to get another pair of ears and hands to help you listen and feel around to isolate what it is. However, the good thing it's not terminal, just annoying! |
