Shift drum/cam bearing
Hello there, I have realised that bearing on the shift drum assembly (5VK-E8540-10) of my old engine I am rebuilding is knackered, is it possible to replace this bearing or do I need to buy a whole new shift drum?

I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to replace the bearing. Just because it is sold as part of an "assembly" that Yamaha sells as a whole doesn't mean you can't get one. After all, a bearing is a bearing. Yamaha (or Motori Minarelli) won't make the bearing, they'll buy them in from a bearing manufacturer, and you can do just the same.
Has it got a bearing number on it? If it has, then use that to source a new one. If not, then take it to a bearing supplier who should be able to match one up for you. |

Yes it does have a bearing number on it (I6005G3?)
I am certain I would be able to get hold of such a bearing, however I do not know how I would remove it as the star shape gear selector is in the way. Any ideas?

I haven't removed a star head from the selector drum on an XT, but I have on a couple of RD350LCs over the years and the selector drum is pretty much of the same design. On an LC the star head is held in place by a cross-headed set screw and cup washer, is it the same on your drum?
If it is, the screw is usually extremely hard to turn/remove. Drill the head off first, remove the cup washer and then pull off the star. You can then grip the exposed threads of the set screw and turn it out. Obviously you will need to obtain a replacement screw and possibly cup washer (easily obtainable from a fastener shop). Make sure you use Loctite when refitting the screw. Interestingly all the separate parts of a 350LC selector drum (including bearing and star head) are available individually, unlike the XT. |

There isn't any screws in this drum I've looked all over.

Well that's a bummer! One can only assume that you do indeed have to replace the whole assembly.

Wow that is indeed a bummer... I will ask Kev as a last resort but I think you may be right as I don't see how it can be removed unless the star head is only pressed on, but that seems unlikely.

Undoubtedly it will have been pressed on. The question is, whether it can be successfully removed and another pressed on? Kev may well have an answer to that one...

Took it to work and showed it to the lead engineer he said the star head has been TIG welded on so no chance to replace the bearing. Fortunately as it is not a high speed bearing I was able to clean it up and it seems smooth running now so wont have to replace the whole drum.
