High beam indicator coming on randomly.

Hi guys,

So as the title suggests, my high beam indicator is coming on randomly, and for some reason, when it does the headlight dims pretty significantly.

If i use the high beam trigger it seems to reset. The indicator goes off and the headlight goes back to it's normal brightness. The problem will come back again almost immediately.

Has anyone ever encountered this before?

99.9% of the time when this kind of issue occurs it is due to a poor, or intermittently bad grounding (earthing) of the headlight bulb. What happens is, when there's a poor earth connection, not all the current can flow to ground by the normal route (through the bulb's earth wire) and what can't will try and flow through the next easiest route (path of least resistance) to ground, which just happens to be through the main beam's positive supply wire, via the warning lamp which has its own ground/earth point.

The dimming of dip beam is due to the poor earth (high resistance) and the warning light glowing is a symptom of the resulting leakage to earth. I'd assume the reason it only does it sometimes is that the poor ground is intermittent, so look for a frayed earth wire, melted bulb holder or corroded connections at the bulb/holder. Also try running a clean earth direct from the bulb straight back to the battery negative to see if that cures things.

Occasionally a faulty H4 bulb (as a result of vibration) can do the same thing as both main and dip filaments are close together and any distortion of the filaments, internal supports or insulation can cause leakage from one circuit to the other. Try a fresh (decent quality) bulb.

I found mine the same and found the headlight plug to be loose and not a tight fit. try checking the bulb connector plug and tweek the pins on the bulb a bit, I also zip tied round the rubber cover on the outside to keep it on. it seems to be doing the trick for the mean time.

Thanks guys, I have a house move and holiday coming up so I will look into the issue more when I have that out of the way.

I hate playing with electrics, it really boggles my brain. Hopefully it is an easy fix!

Something I had happen.... might not be your issue..

dose it only happen when yer pull the clutch lever in....

if so the clutch lever is hitting the pass button on the front side
of the switch block....
turn the switch block or clutch lever so they miss each other...

Thanks but that is not the case. I have narrowed it down to the plug behind the bulb.
