shock Tool ?

Evening all

So I removed my front shocks today to change the leaking seals.

Read up a few posts and used the drill to remove the bottom bolt...
(Good tip thanks)

My question is this.. now that I've got it apart... what does the holding tool supposedly look like?

There's no where to "connect" a tool to.
I wanted to make a tool to tighten it but the inner tube is just that. It has a few holes in it but I can't see any way to attach a tool to it.

Hope this makes sense? If you've removed a fork you'll know what I'm talking about..

Any ideas?

Thanks

Marc

My 'holding' tool is a broom handle with a sharpened end!

The purpose is to hold the damper rod in place whilst you undo the bolt at the base of the fork leg. With the broom handle you just wack it into the recess at the top of the damper rod, turn the fork upside down, press down on the the fork (which will be resting on the brrom handle sticking out the end) and undo the bolt.

The holding tool is just a special socket that fits in the recess on the end of the damper rod and goes on the end of an extension bar.

If you've managed to change the seals and get the damper rods out, then you've been lucky enough to manage without any special tools/broom handles! Have a look at the upper end of the damper rod and you'll see the square recess in the top where the special holding tool fits.

To aid retightening of the damper rod bolts, all you need to do is find/make something that is long enough to fit down the fork and fit into that recess.

i never take forks apart to change the seals....
i remove the circlip holding the seal the use compressed air to pop/blow the seal out..
i have a tappered rubber plug with a 6mm hole down the centre
push it in the fork top put a air/dust gun in the hole push like hell
the seals just pop out...

another way i have seen but tryed it...
remove the circlip/oil/spring hold the forks at full
length put the top cap back on...
then bounce the fork on a bit of wood... that compresses
the air in them & pushes the seal out...

Smile

if you want to try using compressed air to blow the seal out then a bung from a wine making shop/kit works perfectly and costs less than 1.00.

Broom handle

Thanks Gentleman

I bought a $2 broom handle and sharpened it as suggested. ... worked a treat and a simple fix.... 😊

Now to get new clips... mine are totally rusted through. I wasn't expecting to replace them when I bought the seals or I would have bought them at the same time. ... doh

Fork oil was black and grimy... 😕

Cheers all
