Dismount wheel of XT660Z Tenere with ABS brakes
Hello everyone, I am spanish and new to the forum and I have just presented.
And I send my first post. I bought a month ago one XT660Z with ABS Tenere late 2104; and one of the things that must be changed is the transmission chain kit. I have already bought but to go to the Customer User Manual that comes with the bike, seeing as remove the rear wheel, torque, etc .; He explains how to do the "normal" XT660Z (incidentally, nothing special, as on any bike), but if the bike takes ABS, like mine, specifies that leads to an Official Service for disassembly of a wheel ??? ?????. And my question, is so complicated and different because you have ABS ?, a special tool is needed ?. Therefore, if one knows how the wheel must be removed to have ABS brakes, please indicate to me that I do not screw up. Thanks in advance. |

Hi Jose, I do not have ABS on my Ten but I cannot think of any reason that ABS would make much difference to wheel removal, Just be careful not to damage the ABS 'wheel' and sensor when you are replacing. Welcome to the Forum!

Thanks, HarryP; I think so too.
But as the User Manual explains that with ABS takes an Official Service Yamaha, I have doubts about how to do it. |

Same Question
Hi JoseTenere,
How did you solve your problem? I bought a Tenere ZA last autumn and now I am facing the same question. For me, it looks like one can easily remove the ABS sensors but the warning in the manual is really scary. However it is a bike for travelling and one can not expect to find a proper garage everywhere... Greetings Rolle |

It is not a problem removing the wheels. Just have to be careful not to damage the pickup or the wiring....
Not worse than that being a bit careful with the braking lines ;-) I've never read the user manual for mine ;-) But i guess that it also states that you need to go the workshop to have the tires replaced and or the brakepads changes. The only "difficult" thing about removing the wheels is taking the front one off. You will need a 14mm hex for that which is not that common in a home garage. The first time i borrowed one from a neighbor which is a farmer. Tractors tempt to use bigger bolt&nuts . But when the chain and sprockets are worn you suspension linkage will almost 100% surely also need some service. So you might consider buying and endless chain and grease alle the linkages pivot axels at the same time

Thanks alot Majland!
Now I feel much better ;-)
Yes, the frontwheel is a bit tricky but I found some really handy tools for both wheels and for work on the tyre. Thanks again Rolle |

Also have a look at your headset bearings - the manual states that it need to be greased at 50.000km but here is a picture of mine after 37000 without winter riding !
I've since been told that it is common because of condensation cased by the temperature changes from having oil in the frame - and lack of grease from factory

Ush! This looks bad. But I guess you could feel that there is something wrong without dismounting everything, right?

Yes - but way to late to save the bearing ....
