After a recent incident with my chain (see the last paragraph for info). I'm thinking of replacing with a 525 chain and sprocket set. Does anyone know whether the wider set up will mean I need to get a new swingarm rubber guard?

* My 520 chain in good condition, well lubed, with plenty of stretch left, no rust etc. let go while I was doing c.75mph and wrapped itslef round the rear axle putting me into a 200m lockup across 2 lanes of motorway. Luckily I kept it upright and the car on my inside saw what was happening...but still, I'm very keen not to repeat this experience!

The stock plastic guide/guard will be fine. I've run a 525 chain for a couple of years now with no issues in this respect.

The most common cause for problems with the swingarm guard is when the shock is saggy, lowering links are fitted and/or the bike is heavily loaded (regardless of chain type). In this condition the swingarm sits in a horizontal plane and the chain makes continual contact on the forward lower edge. There have been a few instances where the guard has worn through and the chain has eaten through the swingarm down to the bearings!
