Any tips for not destroying an inner tube?

Did my first tyre change on my 660R yesterday. Got the rear done pretty quickly with just a set of levers. Inflated to 30psi. Checked this morning and it's completely flat, so it looks like I'm going to have to order a new tube.

Does anyone have any tips on how to avoid the above set back? Also any tips for changing an inner tube without a full tyre change.

Thanks in advance!
