Tacho making noise
What causes my tacho make noises, its like grinding gears mostly below 3000rpm. Has anyone had this problem? Bike is at 65 000km's.
Also the needle is not stable at all, very erratic. Is that normal? Does not matter if riding or at idle. Engine works fine. |

They're electronic, so unfortunately the "loose cable" issue that typically besets tachos on singles isn't going to be the fix! These dashes are hard to open up (and re-seal) and there are no internal spares available. Some circuit board -related electronic faults can be sorted by specialists, but that's about it.
I do think the dash is a bit of a weak spot on the Z. Vibration damping is poor and the quality isn't up to the mark. I am on my third dash! First was replaced under warranty due to water ingress/condensation (which came back on the replacement) and the second time was a couple of years back when the tacho needle fell off! Before this happened it did get erratic, but didn't notice any noise, but then I wouldn't with the DNA intake roar and aftermarket pipe! Ultimately, one day it breifly got stuck just over 5000 rpm and then subsequently fell off. I was lucky to find a used unit for 130. I know of at least two other Teneres where this has also happened. See how it goes... I wonder if your needle will eventually go AWOL? |
