As I'm contemplating ''actually bought all the bits'' a big airbox mod followed by a pcv and custom map on my 04 xtx I've come across a bit of a ?? As to how would I go on in the future if/when our government clamp down emissions law for bikes, if I let the bike breath to how it should for good non lumpy performance am I going to get slaughtered if/when laws change.

I think if they were to change laws it would have to be to anything forward of that date.

Same with everything else. Old cars don't require seat belts or fog lights or airbags if they weren't fitted before hand. And would be in the same way that ABS on bikes from 2016 won't affect bikes that are released now.

Also allowing the bike to breath more and adjusting the fueling shouldn't increase the emissions. If it's done properly you should get a more complete burn.

Steve is right. Euro emissions regulations for motorcycles are not be applied retrospectively.

Currently bikes have to comply with Euro 3 for type approval in the EU, but are not tested at the MOT. Only a new bike at point the point it leaves the factory. When Euro 4 is rolled out from 1st January 2017 for all new bikes requiring type approval, emissions will be tested for the MOT, but only from 1st January 2018.

From 1st January 2018 all pre 2017 bikes will just require a "visual" emissions check as is currently the case. You haven't anything to worry about.

FYI, as the XT range stands, none of the current models will pass Euro 4. Which is why it's highly likely that that the XT660 will end production in the year or so...

That isn't true I'm afraid,the emissions test for manufacturers is a bit like sitting an exam when you already know the answers.

It's done at 4250 revs or close so the manufacturers cheat by starving the engine of fuel,less fuel less emissions and hence why all modern day engines have a flat spot.

Where the extra performance comes from is filling that flat spot with fuel and hence the increase in performance and of course emissions,all of which is a minor detail really there's an emission test for diesels which can be got around,I wouldn't be loosing any sleep about such on an XT.
