XT660Z Wheel(s) upgrade - options ??
Afternoon All,
I have just heard from my local garage where I took my bike for a rear wheel bearing replacement that its not just the bearings its the whole hub might need replacing. This is probably due to the fact that previous bearings (when my hubs were re-painted and re-assembled) were not fitted properly etc...and ruined the whole housing. Anyway, I think it might be a time for some upgrade for better rim / wheel. I am thinking about something with excel rims talon hubs ?? What do people do / go for ?? What options do we have now on the market ? I font want to spend 1k on a wheel ?? Your suggestions / opinions folks ?? Cheers, Chris |

You should be able to source the parts to build a wheel from scratch for around the 450-500 mark (Talon hub, bearings, Excel rim, spoke set and machined spacers), a little more if you require a sprocket and brake disc. Add to that the cost of building (if you don't fancy taking it on yourself) which would be somewhere between 60 and 100, and you should be able to do it for not far off half the price OTR charge for a ready made rear wheel.
Contacting Talon is probably a good starting point. They will actually build a complete wheel for you if you so desired and it will still be considerably cheaper than OTR (for the same product). This thread maybe of use to you as well: http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=21607 |

As Pleiades says, speaking to Talon is the best bet...they have had some reorganisation there and are keen to devolop stuff like replacement wheels for the Tenere that are a more straightforward replacement.....as soon as I can afford it, using distorted man-maths I shall go this route!, the biggest decision will be silver rims and gold hubs...or gold rims and silver hubs...? 1 Vote for Gold Rims / Silver hub.
But that's just me I do like the 'ol' classic Gold rim. Then again I used to be indecisive but now I'm not so sure. |

silver rims for me....
don't show the tyre lever marks as much as coloured rims... I don't carry rim protectors on the bike for fixing flat tyres in the middle of nowhere.. not worryed about garking up the rim just want to get the flat fixed..

I had my rear wheel of this weekend. I put it on the scale. It was about 14.6 kg.
That is with disc, supersprox sprocket and Michelin sirac. I'm curious about the weight of the original wheel. This weekend I'll probably take off the front one as well, do I will weigh it |

I would probably be interested if they can come up with something, do you think they might give a better price if several were ordered?.

I too would be interested in a talon rear wheel. Im on my second rear Wheel. After a bearing seized and made the bearing seat almost a mm bigger. Ive got a Talon front fitted with my WP fork conversion.
Ive emailed Talon over a week ago but have yet to get a reply. If theres a group buy id be in.
