Question Newbie Filter & Mod questions

Hi guys, firstly I am sorry to recycle questions which have probably been asked multiple times, but the forum search requires a lot of digging about sometimes!

Regarding air filters - If I fit a DNA stage 2 filter do I also need to keep the stage 1 filter in (and replace with a K&N/DNA) or does the stage 2 acting as a primary filter mean the internal filter is not needed? I'm also assuming that the snorkel is to be removed as well.

Also it's to my understanding that to run with modified filters it's advised to use Kev mod (I am on an 04' XT), would I also need to make adjustments to the CO settings?

Sorry for the age old questions guys.

Thanks.

From what I've been able to tell (and this is just through looking about and reading so I'm probably wrong with the order), it goes;

1 - Replace normal filter with KN/DNA item (This)
2 - Replace factory snorkel with DNA open one (This)
3 - Replace side of airbox with the big panel filter (This)

This way the first step just increases flow through the filter, second step increases the amount of air that can get to that filter, and third step adds a second filter to double the amount of air coming through. Maybe a different order, so if anyone else says something different probably listen to them

If you run the stage 2 airbox cover you must still retain the internal (stage 1) filter. You can run with a stage 2 cover and the stock inner filter, the airflow would be increased over stock, but you wouldn't be maximising the benefits of the stage 2 without the stage 1.

The snorkel is a restriction, so just as well to remove it. It's primary function is to silence induction noise.

Yes, you will need a Kev mod (or Power Commander) to add fuel and compensate for the extra air and to maintain a suitable air/fuel ratio. You do not necessarily need to adjust the CO as this only affects throttle openings up to 2% and idle.

Okay guys so today i installed the Kev mod, DNA 1 & DNA 2.

Scary moment haha!

Fuel mod placement

DNA 1

DNA 2

I've set the Kev mod to about 5 o'clock which seems to work well, however I do seem to be getting more popping in the exhaust than usual, is this normal or do I have the fuel/air set wrong?

Overall, surging is about 80% better which is great, and nice increase in low end power! WooHoo! love the new sound DNA 2 gives as well.

Thanks for these postings, I'm still a bit confused by things.

So for a simplon, I need, two filters (stage 1 & stage 2) which is 1) inside and 2) is the side filter, it that correct as per the pic above ???

I also require a ken mod to adjust the fuel once the stage two is in, have I got that correct also ??

And if so, where does this o2 controller thing folk mention fit in to the equation ??

Hold your horses! I think you may well be confusing yourself here - you have a Tenere don't you? The airbox setup on the Ten is somewhat different to the R/X. This thread is referring to the filters for the XT660R and XT660X models.

Go back to the thread you started a few weeks ago and have a read/look through my posts again and familiarise yourself again with the Tenere setup...

Well, actually, I don't have a xtz at all....yet, it's getting delivered Thursday

I'm just trying to understand it all, but appreciate you pointing out I'm talking about the wrong bike in this topic

I'm guessing I'll get a better idea once it arrives and I start tearing it apart

Aye, it will all make complete sense!

Be sure to show us some pics of your Tenere when you get it...
