            "Crunchy" 2nd - 1st shift

             2014 XT660Z, 10,000km on it's second clutch already (1st one burned out).

I can shift up fine, but I get resistance (and sometimes a *crunch* sound) when moving from 2nd to 1st. Any body else have this? Know what it might mean? Cheers. |

I blew a clutch in the first 700km it wasn't adjusted right from dealer I had no idea until it was well and truly rooted. When they replaced it under warranty I had a similar problem with selecting gears but again was just a clutch adjustment. The clutch wasn't fully disengaging on pulling the lever in I adjusted it and problem went away. I then took my bike to a competent mechanic to double check everything

            Crunchy gear shift

I have the same on my 2014 Ten with 11000kms. All other gear changes are very positive but 2nd to 1st is crunchy and 1st to 2nd a bit "notchy". Did you resolve this?

I'd completely slacken the clutch then start tightening up slowly. also check your chain slack as a slack chain can give notchy shifts

Thanks for your reply, it made sense. I have done as you suggested and am confident the clutch is correctly adjusted. As the changes in other gears are fine I don't think it's a clutch issue. On the main stand, pulling in the clutch lever while in 1st gear the rear wheel quickly slows to a stop. Getting the chain in spec seems a bit tricky/fiddly but running it tighter certainly reduced the vibes in all gears however hasn't really improved the changes to and from 1st and 2nd. If I knew this was "normal" for an XT then I wouldn't worry about it but in comparison to other bikes I've owned it is rough. Having said that, it doesn't crop up on the forum as a well known issue so maybe its just what it is?!?

It might be worth checking your cush drive for wear. I've got a 11/12 built Ten & found 3rd gear a bit clonky. I've covered 2500kms from new. On taking the back wheel off to inspect the rubbers I couldn't believe the wear that had taken place. So I performed the Kev Cush Drive rubber mod with bits of old motorcycle inner tubes, the gear box is much happier now.

            Thanks

I recently fitted polyurethane cush drive rubbers but had to trim them down to get the whole thing back together as they seemed massively oversized. A friend who is a bike mechanic managed to get them to fit without trimming by liberal use of WD40. Perhaps I over-did-it and negated the value of new rubbers? I think I'll take the bike and have one of these guys ride it and see what they think. New cush drive rubber and or a new chain would be a great solution.

My 1-2 shift can be notchy at times, especially when the oil is really hot.

I reckon the 2-1 shift is a case of remembering the noticeable jump between 1st and 2nd, and either slowing down a bit more before downshifting, or giving the engine a bigger rev! |
