Fitting my owner tyres? Advice and thoughts pls.

Hey guys, from reading round the forum the idea of saving a few quid and fitting my own tyres is begging to appeal to me, what would I be letting myself in for? I tend to fit more aggressive tread wheels like tkc's and k60's. Would it be worth balancing? Any special kit needed? Does the money saving out weigh the aggro?

Reason I ask is my local shops are a little funny about fitting tyres they don't supply but online prices are getting so competitive now.

Great vid. It looks so easy when you have the tire change stand. Saw a couple of new tricks. I have been changing my tyres on the floor on an old tyre and putting the tube after one side is on the rim wich makes putting the valve in place veery difficult

I've seen that vid amongst all the looking around I've done and these guys make it look so easy, as you said it's something you get better at the more you do it, next question do you really need to balance tyres on the xt?

So what's the trick for replacing the rear? I managed the front after 2 goes after nicking the inner tube with the irons, now the rear really is a test of patience, it took 2 hours to finally break the bead, and I wasn't happy with how much effort it took trying to get the bead over the rim, I actually thought I'd end up breaking the rim. Well I ended up dropping it off at a garage to get it done, but is the a trick I've missed with doing the rear? I had 2x16" and 2x24" irons to work with.

Check this out http://www.kauritmoto.com/ tyre mounting tool or Baja No Pinch tool. http://www.bajanopinch.com/shop/

I'm considering of buying one of those tools.. Pinched two tubes last time I changed rear tyre ..

How did you find the rear? I just could not get the bead over over the rim.

Are you using any lubricant? I'm using dishwash soap water and seems to work fine.

I got it on the the rim by using brute force also I have a beadbuddy that helps so you don't have to use your other hand to keep the bead from rising o the opposite side. Also make sure that you push the bead that you have gotten over in the middle of the rim, that helps to get more slack as it goes more in to the rim..

Hope you get what I mean

Hey sika you were a few steps ahead of me lol, I just couldn't get the old tyre off, broke the bead after plenty of swearing, but just could not get the old tyre off.

It seemed like it was taking to much force, and I was has problems trying to get it started off.

changeing a tyre the first time is NEVER easy.. or the first 10 times..
It really is a practiced skill... They are easy when you get the hang of them..
I do 6, 10 a year..

Make sure the other side of the tyre from where you are working it , is down in the well in the centre of the rim to give you enough free tyre to lever over
the rim.. & lots of lube.....
