Tool storage with MTC single can

Evening chaps. With the non biking weather today I decided to spend some time in the garage. Inspired by Pleadis's tool tube construction in another thread (cheers ) I decided to make my own.

Having been lucky to buy a cheap second hand MTC can (awesome exhaust by the way!) I was left with the space for a bit of tool storage. Similar to Pleadis, I used some 110mm soil pipe and some solvent weld end caps to achieve this.

I bought a couple of exhaust hangers. One of the hangers attached nicely to the MTC bracket (with a 25mm aluminium spacer) and knocked up a stainless bracket to attach one of the hangers to the bolt that goes through the grab rail plastic handle. Needed a slightly longer bolt, but it all works well and is nice and tight.

You can see I put a 20mm spacer on one of the exhaust hangers as the hanger was going around the end cap (slightly larger diameter) and wanted to keep the rubber strip to stop any slippage - you could use the hanger without the rubber strip and wouldn't need a spacer here.

I added a small bolt to give a little bit of extra support to stop any forward/backward movement by drilling through the exhaust hanger into the tube. You can just about see it at the bottom of this pic.

I also used a bit of strong contact adhesive between the exhaust hanger rubbers and the tube for a bit of extra holding.

I can see what Pleadis means about the possible problem of damage to the tube/mounts if the bike gets dropped on it's side. The exhaust hangers being made from thin stainless steel have a bit of flex, so if dropped should be easy to bend back (hopefully!).

The whole thing seems pretty sturdy and I'm pretty happy with it! Managed to get all my tools and 2 spare inner tubes in it. Job done.

Lovely tidy job, well done. My single can exhaust is making it's way to me and I shall be attempting to copy this when it arrives.

Good work there lads.

A decent length piece of soil pipe is unbeatable for carrying all your sh!t - both tubes, takes full length levers and all your tools, sundries and other crap, much more practical than the tiny operator's manual canisters.

The irony is, we're all still using soil pipe for it's intended purpose - carrying crap!
