Coolant spilling through radiator cap. Why?

Hi there,

I drained the coolant from my Tenere (2009) but I am having trouble to refill the system again.

Basically, every time I switch on the engine, the coolant will come out through the radiator cap.
I read here that there are some faulty caps out there for some XT models. Is the one for the Tenere 2009 among these? The cap was OK until I drained the system.

Maybe I am doing something wrong? Should the cap fit tight on the neck of the radiator? Seems a bot loose to me. Not sure whether it should be like that.

Any suggestion?

Thanks!

The cap should be a tight fit. If it is at all loose then the most likley scenario is you've not fitted it straight/correctly. Chances are you've only hooked one side of it in place. It's a bit fiddly to get on right particularly if the tank is still in place. You need to push it down firmly and evenly before your turn it to lock it in place.

There have been cases of Teneres with dodgy caps, but its mostly R/X models with the problem.

Hi,

false alarm. Shame on me!

The problem was that after removing the radiator to do the valve clearance, I fit two hoses in the wrong place. Basically, the hose that communicates the expansion tank and the rad was in the wrong place. And so was the one that return the coolant into the engine (is that the purpose of the hose just under the neck of the rad?).
Since I only run the engine for a couple of minutes with the hoses on the wrong place I think the mistake did not have further consequences. I run the bike yesterday after fitting the hoses correctly and it all looks good.

Thanks for the suggestions Pleiades.
