XT900z Tenere?
In light of Yamaha's new MT09 will the engine be used in a 900 Tenere? If it is I for one will be giving it a good look.

My local dealer said they will be using it and that it'll very off road focused - but I'll believe that when I see it!

I think it will happen.
There was a gap in the market that the GS800 and tiger XC filled. Both are OK but not great in my eyes. BMW has the 1200 market sorted but the 800-900cc market is still open to takers. The XT has taken the 600cc slot. If yam get this right with the Tenere styling off road ability with plenty of power and more on road comfort they will have a winner. But there is the problem as they could make a bike that it much better than the super tenere. So rather than making the best they can i feel they will make the best they can without making it better than the super tenere...which will be a big mistake. Mike |

I suspect that they may well drop the 900 into a Tenere style frame, but ...
I don't think we will see a 660 and a 900cc offering from Yamaha. If the they do enter the middle ground, then I expect they will cease or reduce the Tenere production in favor of a 900. And I won't be buying one, I have the Tiger and the triple is just too much constant delivery for riding the loose stuff. They will release the 'New 900 Tenere' .... We may well see some development of the R & X, maybe larger tank, improved airbox and larger fairing to fill the gap left by the 660 Tenere. Just guessing - but Yamaha aren't know for their marketing acumen in this sector. They had a chance to do good stuff, and they opted for the 1200 sector.

Yea I was flabbergasted when I saw the 1200 .I'd been holding back buying one when they said a super ten was coming out but in all honesty its a bloody big road bike not a super ten.
Like you I'm very sceptical of the new bike.

Read a review on the new Yamaha engine in it streetbike guise and its not very good new - snatchy throttle and fly by wire.
If its true they are going to use this engine then it'll be a disaster unless they sort the fueling out.

Anyone that thinks Yamaha are going to build something like a KTM 9x0 ADV is going to be extremely disappointed. Just as they were when the current SuperTen came out.
That was always going to be a 1200GS clone. This is inevitably going to be an 800GS/800Tigger clone - decent tarmac road tourer, not open class desert racer. Even KTM have gone that way with the move from the 990 to the 1200. I don't agree with GulGo about the end of the 660Z. It's the biggest selling of the three models, can't cost much more than the X or R to produce, but sells for a lot more. The 'adventure bike' market is growing, it's taken Yamaha a while to figure that out, but it's not surprising that now they've finally cottoned on they would try to fill all the sub-divisions of the class. BMW canned their 650 class bikes, assuming everyone would want to buy one of the new 800 multi-cylinders. They backtracked fairly quickly on that mistake, and now have offerings in all three capacities. IMO ![]()

I am sure that we will see several new models based on this amazing new engine. I can surely be tailored very easily for various applications. So I would guess a 900 Tenere will follow and that should never replace the 660 and the 1200, but fill a void in Yamahas range of models offered. Try the MT 09 just for fun, its truly amazing!!!

Not sure I see the point, the 660 is more than capable of going around the world a few times and why would you make a more off road focused Tenere and make it heavier by putting a bigger lump in it ?
Hmmmmmm....

Because marketing dictates it. MOST customers of the GS1200 BMW never venture off road but it looks as it they can. MOST customers of SUV cars never go beyond Tescos but it looks as if they could drive thro Africa. Go figure. Logic does not enter the equation!!! We are talking instead fashion and trends and looks and image and stuff.
