chain slack under load

Hi

ive have mine chain slack set to (what i think) is the right amount. its about 55mm.

when you lean th bike against the wall the suspension is then taking the weight. If i grab mine chain in the centre it moves about 10mm. Is this right? ive never checked any chain under load before and i was expecting it to be slacker than that

Cheers

They do get quite a bit tighter as the suspension compresses and the swingarm moves more into line with the gearbox sprocket and the suspension gets toward the centre of its travel. Mine is similar, 50/55mm slack on the stand, but probably nearer 25mm with the bike supporting its own weight and about 15mm with me sat on it. It does depend on what preload/sag you've got it dialled in; and if you've got an long-in-the-tooth OE shock, then it'll tend to tighten up even more!

Whenever I adjust the chain, I always check it again with me (or the Mrs) sat on it to check its not over tight in the middle of the suspension's travel. When I load up with luggage I always do a precautionary check before riding, and quite often I've found the need to loosen the chain back off a bit. I guess you could even ratchet the bike down and compress the suspension fully and check...

It isn't an exact science though, trial and error and plenty of checks at different levels of compression. All bike's with long travel suspension are a bit hit and miss with chain adjustment, it isn't just the Tenere, although some do benefit from having the swingarm pivot in closer proximity to the gearbox sprocket which helps.

The most important thing is to make sure you are checking it on it's tight spot......

Better a little slack that too tight.....

It is much simpler just to put a lift under the engine, remove the dog-bones and lower it undtil the tightest spot. (A good time to grease all the joints)

When you then raise it again you can measure the slag and use it as a guideline.

Not sure that's simpler!

But a good point none the less.

The problem is my chain has a nasty tight spot. So i set the slack, take the bike of the stand and the chain is f*in tight, so slack it off abit and al is fine.

EXCEPT....the above adjustments are done on the tight spot. So when you rotate the wheel so you off the tight spot the chain is flapping like a witches tit! So i have to run my chain fairly slack due to the bloody tight spot.

any how...going 14T on the front as i have enough of doing hill climbs in second and the engine starting to bog down.

Any good places to pick up a quality 14T sprocket?
