Buying a tenere
Hi all, I'm looking at a second hand 2009 xt660z.
My question is 70,000km still ok for reliability? The higher km ones are naturally 30% cheaper but is it false economy. Are there timing chains etc that require changing at this km? Love this siet, thanks in advance. Al |

70000Km shouldn't be a reason to put you off buying a Tenere.
The engines are strong, just look for evidence of regular oil/filter changes and all the usual stuff. The regulator/rectifier connector is prone to failure, but on a 2009 bike with 70K on it, you can probably assume it has: (a) gone already and been replaced or, (b) it's lasted this long so it probably isn't going to fail! Either way there are cheap fixes for this issue. The bearings (all of them) were never greased well at the factory, so check the swingarm and linkage for squeaks and excessive play. Get the rear wheel off the ground and have a good old tug from side to side. Same at the front - get the wheel off the ground and check for smooth operation of the steering. At 70K, the OE Sachs shock will almost certainly be well past its best. Look to see if it has been replaced, if not see how it performs and if its bad, haggle on the price. Good luck! |

How much are they asking?? Any service history?? U gotta haggle the price a bit cos you will surely need to change chain and sprocket, tyres, oil and filter, bearings (wheels and swing arms, for instance) so all really depends on how much they want and how it has been kept. Was he a courrier???

I assume all of us here on the forum are good oners who look after their machines Aren't we?? So why you assume the owner of this one has not look after his bike?? 70k bike, probably I wouldnt buy it but doesnt mean it has not been look after and will not last another 70k. Take with you somebody who knows more about mechanics and ideally who know the bike and give it a good check. |
