660x Vs 660R exhaust

hello chaps
was hanging out with a friend with a 660r on the weekend. we both have standard pipes (his is a '05 R and mine an '04 x) but his exhaust note sounds a lot deeper and nicer.
his pipes protrude slightly from the wider exhaust housing whereas mine are very short meaning the sound bounces around the end of the cans making a higher pitch tinny sound.

has the previous owner fiddled with my bike and shortened the inner pipe or do the X and R have slightly diffrent exhausts?

if i'm not being clear i can try to grab a picture.

ta!

Dave

To the best of my knolwedge X and R have the exact same exhausts. Have a look under the saddle of your mate's bike see if he's got the snorkle taken out, because normally when the snorkle is removed the bike has a distinct deeper tone.

As for the pipe lenghts, are you sure? Did you use a measuring tape to compare the difference? I ask because I can't see how anyone in their right mind would modify a set of original exhaust by cutting the lenght of these pipes and gain nothing in performance.

Besides the original exhausts, are a be-atch to work with because unlike after market ones, the original are one piece (heavy basteeds) from the end can all the way to the joint with the headers under the sump, whereas after market consist of link pipes and cans separately which then join up with the headers under the sump.

I am really confused about this one, mate!

exhaust wierdness

hello

yeah he's not done any engine or fueling mods to his, it's totally stock.

i'll grab a picture of it when i can but the diffrence is so dramatic that you dont need a tape measure, on his the inner pipe allmost extends beyond the outer cans , wheras on mine they are really sunken in, so that they are only visable if you peer right into the end of the cans.

i can think of no idea why someone would do this, it's really odd and because the sound reverberates around the end piece (the black conical section) and sounds like a 2 stroke falling down stairs at low revs.

any thoughs at all??

cheers!

short pipe syndrome

So the main length of the can is the same - it's just the protruding inner pipe length is shorter on yours??

I reckon the previous owner of your bike drilled out the rivets to take off the black cone ends, then hacksawed off the inner pipe, then replaced the cones. Not sure why - maybe he wanted the holes at the end of his pipes to look bigger and tougher and the dinky one inch pipes poking out made him feel like a small man riding a postie bike...

Cosmetic reasons, I reckon, because I can't think how it would cause noticeable performance gains. Obviously a fail by the sound of it!

circumcised pipes!

Hey spinner Dan

i reckon you are spot on.
no idea why this peanarse did this however, it sounds so much better with the normal pipes.

picture attached (i think) for those that want to see what happens when an idiot with a junior hacksaw buys an XTX!
so.. new pipes then i guess... whats the cheapest option??
