Tube inflation

This is possibly the dimmest query I have ever posted, but ...

I have a tubeless repair kit in the garage, but currently don't have a bike with tubeless tyres. Am I right in thinking that the gas bombs and the little adapter that screws on the valve will be OK for inflating a tubed tyre post-repair? I can't see any reason why not, but I thought I would ask. Supplementary question for bonus points: roughly how many CO2 bombs would it take to inflate a tyre to a rideable condition? (I carried the kit for many thousands of touring miles, but never had to use it, so I haven't a clue if it's one or 20.)

I'm trying to put together a tyre repair kit which doesn't involve a mini-pump (lazy) or a compressor (space, weight).

Also, any recommendations for a good patch kit?

Technically - yes.

Always 1 or 2 more than you have.

I've tried these things, and to be honest..... I carry a small bike pump.

Hmmm ... I like the 'technically'

So what you are saying is: it will work to inflate the tyre, but it takes a lot of CO2 to do so, and using a pump is in fact easier? And/or, if you carried enough CO2 to do the job, it would take up more room than a pump or compressor?

Got it - that's pretty much what I thought people would say. The whole idea seemed too easy ...

I carry a lightweight MTB pump at the moment, but I am on the lookout for a bicycle mini-pump which would save a bit of space. Aldi/Lidl have one on sale this week, so I will have a look at that.

I just hate pumping up tyres ... Bad enough on a 26x1.25

Thank you for the response.

IF, you could get all of the CO2 in the tube it would work fine. In my experience 80% of the gas escapes before you have the little adapters sorted out.

Years ago I had one for the MTB, it had a great adapter fitted with a screw controlled valve. So you fitted the gas canister, then screwed the valve in to pierce the gas, meaning you could have the whole thing assembled before committing.

I've not managed to find such a valve assembly since I left mine somewhere in Borrowdale. But if I could find one.....

That might just be the answer...

And yet I have not heard of major problems from people using this system with tubeless tyres. A few have said that they had to top the tyre up with a pump, but I haven't heard anyone saying it failed totally.

Your adapter with a valve sounds like a great idea. The little plastic adapter you get with the Rema type of system does look very flimsy. I really haven't a clue on this, though. When I got the kit I practised reaming the hole and fitting the mushrooms on a scrap tyre, but I didn't try the inflator because I didn't want to waste the CO2 cartridges. Having priced them up online, I can see that you don't want to use them unnecessarily.

OK, mini-pump it is - and a Slime compressor on my Christmas list

As it happened, I used one of these kits on my X today!

My tyre was slightly soft, still good to limp the few miles home in my opinion, but a friend insisted on using his CO2! It took 2 cannisters to get my tyre back to normal pressure, so I'd reckon it could take 6-10 if your tyre was flat as a pancake!

Thanks for that. I was wondering how many it would take

I have two Rep&Air kits in the garage, and I now know that I can inflate precisely 1.5 tyres. Not a lot of use for a long trip. I bought a cheapo bicycle mini pump last week at Aldi, so we will see how that goes.

I am beginning to see why so many people like the Slime compressors ...
