Metzler Tourance: Expected life for rear tyre

             Hi all,

I got my XTZ last October and it had badly worn tyres so I got a new pair of Metzler Tourances. They've been great for road and (minor) off-road use. I noticed today that the rear tyre is starting to look rather worn, like it'll want replacing soon. I've probably done about 3-4k miles since these were fitted so I'm surprised that the rear is already looking worn. So my questions are: 1) Is 3-4k miles normal for the life of a rear tyre? 2) Are Metzler Tourance a soft tyre that wears quickly? 3) Am I 'shredding' the tyre by lots of hard acceleration? Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. Steve. |

3-4k is a bit low, my old xtr I'd get a good 5-6 from a rear and I didn hold back on the throttle but the. again then xtrs a bit lighter.

the tourances aren't be softest tyre but not the hardest, I found they give good great for the mileage and feel, any lessor mullahs and feel and I'd probably want to change to some better. The hard on/off acceleration doesn't help, but it's normally a combination of mileage, speed, cornering speeds/forces, and the amount of weight you+bike+kit/luggage are.

The original fitment rear on mine was absolutely slick in the middle by 6000 miles.

I squeezed 9K out of the original tyres. However, I was touring, fully loaded and the riding was steady constant speeds on various road types, covering around 400 miles a day for 8000 of those miles.

Both front and rear were completely shot to bits by the end. The second set lasted some 5K, if I remember right. I haven't run a Tourance for a number of years now, so this info might be time expired!

If I get 4000km from a rear I've done well...

I use either 700 or 705 Shinko's... I could get more but I change them at 75% worn they just don't hook up on the dirt after that...

Changed original fit Tourance at 4.5K miles as the handling turned really nasty. Rear was a bit square and I'd guess there was probably 1-1.5K more miles possible if you ran it into the ground. Overall didn't like them on the Ten and haven't had any since.
