What do you think ? Friend or Foe ?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programme...ne/9776325.stm
I saw this over the weekend, but again today it reminded me. A carike ? Biar? If this gets more car drivers onto two wheels is it a good thing ??? Bit on the pricey side for now, but not so far from a GS or Multistrada..... although I can't see how many GS oe MS riders would swap for an electric Bicycar... and what would you call it anyway ? Come on, good bad or a waste of time and money ??? would you buy one ?

looks interesting, i do think the price sounds perhaps a little low as there is a lot of hi tec involved + r&d and legislative costs and i think that will be a hard thing to market to the masses.
i cannot see it being a bad thing for the motorcycling world, bmw had the c1 i've seen quite a few, mainly in paris tho http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_C1 . who can forget the british quasar concept, even some nut job was preparing one for the dakar in the late 80's http://feetforwardsite.co.uk/ anyhow can you imagine if you used one for commuting during the week and come the weekend getting on a regular trail mount only to find yourself falling off every farts end cos the gyros didn't stabilize...... would i fork out for one? nah. only if i was wheelchair bound, perhaps i would consider it then, does it come in camo colours and knobblies? |

Now there's a funny thing...
Quote from the Lit web site - "Because the C-1 is all-wheel drive and has our gyro stability system, it will handle as well as, if not better than, any other all-wheel drive car in inclement weather. And we have an off-road version in the works!" |

I like it.
Something new is not always bad. All tech is expensive when its new, remember the first digital watches, or calculators? Now they are give away items that were out of reach of working people when they were new. I wouldn't mind the gyros on the TEN though, help me stay upright more on the trail.

Electric, small, stable and safe - to be honest I think they could hit a sweet spot in the market for those who would rather not be burdened with a car - and there's a lot of us out there.
The important thing is that the range isn't ludicrously short - did they say 220 miles? You could charge it once a fortnight or leave it even longer between commutes And you could fit it in a shed. I'm all up for this. If it helps attract a few more people to two wheels, it can only mean more space on the road for us!

They produced a bike with a cover, this one has all the tech inside to keep it properly stable.
I wonder though, whilst cornering, presumably the giro's will need to know how much tilt to apply at speed/bend radius... we know that this changes with mood/road conditions, so I wonder how they will deal with this.... I think,,, anything that gets people out of cars and onto two wheels is good. Sure, it's not a bike, won't feel like a bike and the question of lane splitting/filtering is open to debate - but it looks a bit like a bike, has two wheels and requires a motorcycle licence to dride it (drive or ride?). So a step in the direction of progress ??? It's been posted on a number of various bike-ish forums, and from what I've seen, this one is the only forum where the general response is fairly open.

I my be wrong but I would think the gyro's are only used in slow or stationary conditions. There would be no need to have working above say 15 mph when normal balance takes over.
"It's been posted on a number of various bike-ish forums, and from what I've seen, this one is the only forum where the general response is fairly open." May be we not all idiots on this site and we look at things with OUR own veiws rather than following the leader.

What happens if the gyro system goes up the swanny & cooks a fuse mid-corner?? I ride a bike precisely because it is a challenge to keep upright & I am at one with the elements!! Also, I doubt this thing is capable of filtering past traffic.
There are clearly some VERY clever people involved in this project - why not use their collective brain power to come up with way more efficient regular bikes, with ultra-long service intervals & ever-lasting tyres..... |
