Alu panniers

Guys as you may know I've just bought a Yamaha Tenere. Now I've got a top box for day trips and the odd bits and bobs but need to get myself a set of panniers for some longer distance touring. I previously had a set of Alpo Aluminmumpanniers for my old xtr and loved the top loading idea and the fact you could use the space rather than the plastic panniers where you need a degree to pack them right!!!

Has any one got Alpo panniers lately? how are they? how did you mount them? how are they holding up?

or any one got similar Aluminmum panniers?

Looking to spend as little as possible (300-350) and doesn't matter if they are thin for a crash just as long as they are water tight

Have you thought about the Yamaha option? I know they arent truly aluminium, but they are top loading, compact and watertight. I know some people have moaned about the keys/locks, but Ive never had any bother (4 years/25K miles). You should easily be able to get a good second hand set well within your budget (in fact I believe uberthumper has a set for sale at the moment?)

I have indeed. Let me know if you're interested and I'll see how much they would be to post up to you, then give you a price.

I liked them - they manage to be quite big without being wide, and they're top-loading, so easy to chuck stuff in. I just don't use them enough to justify having the money tied up in them, hence they're up for sale.

I have fitted the Givi Trekker aluminium panniers to mine http://www.givi.it/Bauletti/Monokey/TRK46N-TREKKER and on a recent long trip round Sardenia they proved excellent!! I have also now bought the internal bags they sell so that when you wanna carry your stuff from the bike to the B and B room, you just carry the bags and leave the panniers locked to the bike. BUT they are not cheap, I paid about 200 Euro per case!!! They can be top opened OR you can open the whole side, as you like, and they can be fitted as side panniers OR as a top box. Quality seems excellent.

gulg
if I where working at home I would take a stab at the home made panniers

Simon
I did look at those panniers but they are a little expensive for the size I'm looking (40-45ltrs each pannier)

fiddich
one set of those panniers are very much the same as the alpos I use to have. the others are nice with the chamfered bottoms.

hhhhmmmm decisions decisions
