Engine cutting out
Hi, I bought a 2009 XT660Z (which has done 3,500 miles and hasn't had a hard life) a couple of weeks ago. Due to the weather (and the fact i've got another bike to use) i've only got around to riding it today.
Now to the problem. Having had numerous big singles over the years i'm used to a good bit of popping and banging but this really is terrible. It pops at every opportunity and in traffic the engine just cuts out making unrideable. It obvious has a problem and i've just emailed the dealer i bought it from. In the meantime, any ideas anyone? Thanks in advance!!! |

Is it idleing fast enough? If the tickover is set too low it will be prone to cutting out.

Yes, it idles fine. As soon as you rev the bike it pops like a good un. I reckon everyone stopped and looked when i rode down my local high street today with all the popping.

That's not quite what Dave was meaning,, these bikes tickover fine, but they are prone to cut-outs if the idle is a tad slow. Increase the Idle a little and see how you get one.
They do pop alot, it's all down to the EU and the emissions regulations, so Yamaha fit an AIS to burn up unused fuel, hence the pop. You can block off your AIS to stop this if you choose, loads of threads about it.

I've had KTMs and Husabergs that have sounded civilised compared to the popping i'm getting on the Tenere. I'll have a play with the idle speed and see if that makes a difference. Thanks again! |

Where abouts in London are you? If you want to meet up either at the Ace cafe or Box hill (or elsewhere if you prefer) we could have a compare of bikes to see if there is a difference?

Hi, Sorry for not getting back to you sooner but that's a great idea. I live at the London end of the M3 in Hampton. Now i've ridden the bike a lot more i'm getting used to it but would still like to compare it with another. |
