33bhp Restriction

Just picked up a XT660 R which is restricted to 33BHP. I'm happy with this as it is and is listed as so on the insurance. I don't have a certificate though, i was not supplied for one my the last owner, only the reciept for the parts. Do i need to provide this certificate to the insurer like my no claims discount? If i crash and the restrictor is in place but the paper work is not am i in trouble?

It is restricted at the throttle!

yes, yes and not sure as to where the restrictor is, rumor has it its in the throttle body.

Speak to your insurance about your intention to derestrict it.

So you are saying they will ask for the bit of paper. Is this available through inspection at a dealer (i.e. is it like a standard form)? Or will i need to buy a whole new kit for the bloody papers?

What a bloody hassle.

Whoever sold you the bike should provide you with the papers I think, then you present these to your insurer.

But he said the PO didn't give him one. If he really can't get the original certificate, I'm sure a Yamaha dealer would confirm that the restrictor is fitted and sign the appropriate bit of paper for a small fee. The insurer will not be interested in whether the restrictor is fitted. What will matter to them is that you have TOLD them you have a restrictor fitted, so when you have your crash they will instruct the assessor to check whether it is STILL fitted. If it ain't, bye-bye insurance cover.

It's the same with other things they take on trust, like whether you park it in a garage or on the street, your medical history, and so on. It gives them something to check before a payout, and grounds to refuse if you have lied to them. It pays to be 100% honest with insurers.
