Electrical power problem.
Hi all,
I have a XTX '05 since 2 years. What I did notice was that I alway's keep busting my taillight every 2-3 month's. I mean the lightbulb and not the lightcover. Normaly it's my rear light that brakes down and not my rear-brake light. I've changed it with a LED version and I don't have that problem anymore. But I've noticed that when I try to use the horn when driving, it makes a "overpitched" sound. Like an air-horn is been cut of almost all air. Also I've busted my Nuvi hardwired power cord for the GPS. Now I was wondering if the bike is giving to much electrical power when driving (motor running). Anyone aware of any electrical problems in that area? Maybe it's just a horn that is due to be replaced and a misconnected the hard wire power cord (used the connector beneath the seat and the back end). All idea's are welcome. Kind regards from Belgium. |

It's possible it's over-charging, which may in turn mean a regulator fault? Easy to test if you have a multimeter - check system voltage with motor running at about 5000rpm, shouldn't be any more than 14.4V (acceptable range 13.6 - 14.4) However, the failures you describe are more likely down to a combination of old age, winter, vibration, bad luck and coincidence!

I'll try to see what voltage I get when reving upto 5000rpm this weekend. Maybe I should try to find a powersource at the front of the bike and try to connect my nuvi hard wire powercable (when the new one arrives). The horn is easy. When I just turn the ignition key to "ON" then it horns normaly. That one indicates me that there could be an electrical problem or the horn hates wind when driving and doesn't like to work then..... eeeuhhh
Checking the voltage (now that I know the numbers to look for) will be done. |
