Lacing Pattern of XTR660
Does anyone
KNOW (not a guess) what the lacing pattern of the XT660 is?
I've searched all over the net and now more confused than ever. See I have a spare front and rear hub (off a totalled XTX) all I need is rims and spokes to make a 2nd pair of wheels. This has been a ongoing project for maybe three years. One set will be 70/30 road/dirt pattern, 2nd set straight knobbies. I was going to use excel A60 and have the rear built as a 18 x 2.5 (giving more tyre options). Cost - not much change out of $1000 but at least the spokes are stainless steel. The options of 18 verse 17 inch tyres isn't really influencing me that much because I am fairly happy with my options and I can't see that in the next say four years that it's going to restrict that much. And I've got 3 near new 17's sitting in the shed of various patterns. But I've also got a very straight, old school pair (36 hole) 17 x 2.15 rear and matching 21 x 1.8 front, made in Japan, D.I.D. Racing, alloy wheels that I got at farm clearance sale for $25 that only need a good polish. Don't know exactly what these are off, but the rear drum brake is huge. Front hub has a massive (bigger than rear), maybe 3/4 inch axle hole. This lacing pattern isn't the same as an XT's so they'd need to be re-drilled before spoked up. Even though only 2.15 in width you can legally put some pretty big knobbies (150/70?) on. So I could polish these or maybe get them powder coated and mounted for less than $500. It is hard to judge because they are still mounted to steel hubs but these rims feel really heavy. But heavy isn't an issue because I like the profile. But I am also leaning toward sticking to the original 17 x 2.75 (yes I realize 2.75 is not a common rim size but I am leaning that way). So I looked at the Sanremo site since they are OEM. In the menu to get a quote you've got to chose between Italian or English spoke pattern, plus the rim profile and style etc, anyone know the rim specs (other than size as supplied in the owner manual). I sent a general enquiry over two weeks ago, just asking a price for an XT660R set of rims delivered to Australia, no reply. So I don't think Sanremo responds unless all the right info is supplied, OR, maybe they don't respond to English emails? Anyone know? Anyone any experience buying from Sanremo direct? I also looked at this Item number: 300644121222 on ebay but I decided that I really didn't need a huge rear rim because realistically I am never going to buy massive super sticky rubber because it costs the earth and wears out anyway. Been there and done that on my XJR1300 (one set cost almost a grand an lasted less than two months - mind you it was a fun two month and I lost 6 points). Cornering can be so much more interesting on really, really good rubber and no doubt I wasn't taking it to anywhere near maximum. I was going to just then sell my two hubs and just go with a spare rear only. I also looked at U.S.A. rims ( http://www.radmfg.com) but they talk about STD or European lacing pattern. Landed cost is less than $350 plus Stainless spokes plus building (it works out to be around $580). Getting 36 hole rim 17 x 3.5 doesn't seem to be the problem but if it need to be put in a jig and re drilled to suit the hub it is going to add to cost. So I need to make a decision. I realise that the samremo isn't noted as a strong rim but didn't really want to rule them out of the mix just yet. Last edited by Woottonboy; 10-03-12 at 10:29. Reason: typo, probably not the only one but an obvious one |
