This a very basic question but I was given the handbook for the X/R when I bought the Tenere second hand. The chain slack is given as 40-55. Is it the same for the Tenere or have I been running it too slack? After a puncture in the wilds of Wales last week the chain was set tighter than "normal" and it seemed to run better.

If your chain is running to tight it could cause your chain to stretch or snap.
or worse it can cause the output shaft bearing oil seal to go.

Remember a chain is better a tad slack than a tad tight .

Yes, that's why I want to know the correct adjustment. Surely someone can tell me!?

Slack should be 50-60mm, bike standing on sidestand, measured in the middle of the swingarm. Look in yer Owner's Manual or Service Manual.

Agree with all the above. Just make sure the shock is on full extension if on the sidestand; better if you have a centrestand. Make sure the chain doesn't contact the underside of the front chain slipper when you are checking the slack (which is as dallas) wrote. It does seem like a lot of slack but it's necessary for the reasons dazzertw said.
