how often do you adjust?... (your chain)

I thought i would post this question as it has just occurred to me today as my speedo hit 4000. That i haven't actually adjusted my chain since my first 600 mile service.

I know the manual says every 300 or so miles it should be checked, and i have been doing that, but it has stayed within 40-50.

Background = xtr660 09, have had from new, has a dual injector scottoiler fitted.

Im guessing the chain needs to be adjusted a little more frequently than every 4000 miles right? so that lead me to think i might be checking the slack wrong?

I dont have a paddock or a centre stand so i put the bike on level ground and push it forward and check for the tightest point in the chain (while its on its side stand) - this part of the chain checking process is what i am least confident with as i have never really felt that one section is tighter than another.... maybe because the chains fairly new i dont know. But i push up on the middle of the chain (between front and rear sprocket) on the underside of the swingarm, and keep doing so until i think one part didnt get pushed as high as the next.

Upon finding my imaginary tight spot i drop the measuring tape behind the chain. I push down on the chain and note the measurment and then i push the chain all the way up and note the measurment. Subtract and it works out at usually 45mm.

Now maybe im missing something horrendous or im doing it wrong or right i have no idea to be honest. so any light shed would be appreciated!

thanks dudes

Andy
