Just goes to show it could be as good as its wee brother offroad!

Still wouldnt fancy trying ot pick it up though!

XT660z......What a machine!!

Current mods:- Yamaha top box, Yamaha hanguards, Heated grips, High front fender, Aux lighting front/rear.

Tats a good little video, I think it shows you what the S10 can do in standard trim. Gives you a good idea if that amount of offroading its acceptable to you.

Its actually fairly easy to do what he was doing. The TCS in mode 2 allows almost anybody to slide the bike without throwing it away.

And its easy to pick up too.

I think you must be easily impressed. My V Strom'll do most if not all of that terrain, from what I saw on the video. I think it's a case of just not being bothered about dropping the bike - in truth, that's the most noticeable inhibiting factor, not the bike. Most people are just overly cautious about dropping their pride and joy.
I'd say it would have to be shown on a lot more difficult terrain than that to be the equal of the 660Z.

Our skill levels aside, if we're honest, I'd bet for most of us the first thing we think of when considering taking a BIG trailee off road, is dropping it and the damage caused. Understandable, given that the bike is likely also to be our tourer, commuter, local bike meet vehicle too. ie when I take my DR250 off road, I NEVER even think about dropping it. It's difficult to measure, but I think the thought of dropping my V Strom thou definately inhibits my choices and riding when I consider off-roading.
In context of my comments on the video, I think it likely that the same rider could do pretty-much the same things on my V Strom. I was talking more about the bike and the terrain, regarding the comparison of the S10 with the XT660Z.

And fair comments to all! I think people are right when they mention inhibitions due to fear of dropping!

I took a demmo out today and found this road......


It had a fairly steep climb up to get up to the lane and it was very rocky and sandy. Going up wasn't bad but coming back down I was bricking it! I think mainly because I was sat there saying to myself 'don't drop the loan bike....don't drop the loan bike'

In reality even though it was slippery and rocky, it was no where near as slippery and steep as the decent we did at the lakes 09 on the coach road GULG took us on......any of you guys know where I mean?
I wasn't worried about dropping the bike and just went for it! Even the guys with the X's managed it (a few needed a change of trousers after)

XT660z......What a machine!!

I rode that road yesterday, there was a bl00dy big hole in it for ages, but now it's got so big it has become a valley, with a lovely smooth dip on one side, a greta drop off in the middle of a mud bath! You takes your choices and hopes you make the other side!! I took the smooth dip, then on the return run I took the drop off... and landed in once piece.

I think I tend to agree with the whole 'don't wanna scratch it' vein. The first time I dropped the Tenere I was bl00dy furious with myself, mostly because I was lead into a situation by a cage driver up a very slippery steep slope (slippery in that it was very very dusty), anyway, the less said about that the better! Now, I'm not so bothered - the bike has it's 'memory marks' and every time I look at the chips and scratches on the tank it reminds me of a great trip. But..... I still use the TTR nearer home and I realy don't care if it goes down, as a result it almost never does, and when it does it's because of some other 'event' (sheep, walkers, mountainbikers) .
