Half stoked

I had a puncture on Friday, and instead of going to the dealer with the bike decided it was time to learn how to remove the rear wheel myself, and whilst at it replace the rear brake pads and do the cush drive mod,a huge job for such a mechanical retard as me.
I took the wheel to the main dealer for the puncture, puncture repair is for another day. not up for that yet. They were not very helpful suppling an old tube for the cush drive mod, so had to improvise on the rubber brought a cheap heavy duty tube for a wheelbarrow, which i was dubious about, but is now fitted and seems tight enough with no play, only time will tell on its longetivity.
For me to be fully stoked at my achievement i need to ask a couple of small questions just for piece of mind, when fitting the rear pads it states always change the pad spring clips, unfortunately they didnt give me those, so i used the old ones as the shop is closed for the weekend and i need it for work monday,is this a major issue?
Secondly the brake pads had a metal heat shield on them, which made it much more difficult to fit them,so i removed them, as i figured as the xt isnt a high performance bike and i ride like an old woman that the heat generated wouldnt be much of a problem, really need to know if what i have done will come back to bite me in the foreseeable future.
