Fork seals done.

Just want to say big thanks to this site, Kev and any contributing members.

I replaced my fork seals today and having never done it before I was chuffed at how easy it was made by looking up sections on this site.

I also fitted Kevs fork spacers and re-packed the head bearings while the bike was up in the air.

My main worry was getting the bottom bolt out of the fork, i had a compressor at home so i got a cheap air impact ratchet off ebay (18) and the bolt just spun out like Kev said - easy. I used the old seal and a small nylon hammer to drive the new seal in - perfect.

I did the cush drive mod on sunday, two bikes took me an hour while talking to my mate and supping a beer - how easy!
Changed the Co as well and blocked the AIS pipe.
The bike is soooo much better. Next mod is raise the rear with XTZ dogs i think.

Just to say that I am the most least experienced mechanic on the planet so if I can do it - so can any one.
These little XTR's are lovely to work on.

Standard links
R 90mm
X 85mm
K 74mm (Kev mod to raise X or R)
Z 126mm

I believe putting Z links on the R will lower it to Hog levels.

This gentleman is correct, the longer the link the lower the bike will sit.
Just changed mine on my "r" for a shorter set to raise it. It's only a five minute job, two bolts out, swap links, two bolts back in.

Just put my fork spacers in too, thats only a five minute job with a 22mm spanner, really is easy but makes hell of a difference to the handling.

Ah, thanks for the correct info - I will look into what links are available.

I want to get back the ride height i lose when loaded without having the spring wound right up.
The metal mule/Scorpion system has greatly improved ground clearance but I think that the swing arm could touch the pipe as it passes round the frame whan loaded and hitting bumps. Any body else found this problem?

Thanks for the replies

Hi,

At first I was thinking, "How?" So I went and had a look.

You're right:

There's a similar scuff on the bottom of the exhaust.

I guess I did crash through some stuff in Morocco...

Cheers,

Ian

Yes i thought that was possible, you have to worry about the Down pipe studs taking the strain over a long period of time. I guess the hangers would be ok?
