Question Clutch Adjustment

Hi everyone, I,m looking for some tech advice regarding my clutch. XTR 2006, standard bike with only 2000 miles, using yamalube semi-synthetic 10W-40 clean oil. I noted the clutch handlebar lever had very little slack in the cable, nearly all the slack removed but not slipping the clutch, the gearchanging was OK.
I adjusted the cable slack as the service manual indicated and confirmed the correct adjustment on the lever on the engine as the service manual instructed. With the correct adjustments the bike started having problems with selecting 3rd gear, I removed the cable slack again and it was OK again. My initial thoughts are the clutch plates are not seperating enough. I have also noted a small amount of lateral play in the top needle bearing in the clutch case housing below the clutch lever. Advice appreciated.
