LED turn-signal conversion

For some time I had been looking at different types of LED turn signals for replacement of the original bulbs on the Tenere with an LED cluster. So, in preparation for the conversion I knew that I would need to replace the original relay with the electronic type that did not depend on the 20W load of the incandescent bulbs to function correctly. The one I selected was a solid state electronic unit and a drop-in-swap with the original, it worked just perfectly with the original bulb turn-signals while I continued my search. A month ago I happened upon the Weiser website http://www.weiser-motorrad.com/home.htm. This company makes LED conversion kits for the OEM turn-signals used on the Tenere (and others) - I was most interested! So, I placed an internet order and received the two kits (two turn-signals per kit) in 48 hours (none too shabby for a UK supplier to the Continent). Everything fit exactly as described. The whole conversion took around 30 minutes and I am very pleased with the results. Interestingly the conversion can work with or without the solid state flasher unit as the conversion has a huge 23 Watt resistor built into each circuit to emulate the load of the original bulbs. However if you want a pure LED conversion that lowers the load on the electrical system, the resistor can be removed simply by cutting its wires (example in the below photo). The flash rate is correct, the amber colour is correct and it is an EU street legal conversion. The only drawback is the ECU thinks I have a blown bulb so the dash light remains steady (indicating a blown bulb or a fault), instead of flashing in sympathy with the indicators. But a minor detail for a nice result.

I'm also thinking about getting LED flashers.
But i wouldn't go for the same size, as they easily get hit when offroading.

Touratech has a complete set, plug and play.

I went for the relay replacement (3 minute job!), cost around 10 from ebay.

Then I purchased some nice little indicators from Hein Gericke (10 each) I got sliglty different ones for the front that have in-built repeater lamps (so you can see the indicator from all angles). I just need to get the tails sorted so I can fit the rear ones!

I went for the LED conversion as I wanted short lights that would be less liklely to become damaged in a spill.

Al together it's cost 50 to replace them.

LED turn-signal conversion

Gas_Up & Nelis, I agree with the idea that if you are going to do the conversion, you might as well make it as off-road and crash friendly as possible. But after being rear-ended twice by blind Parisien drivers, the brighter and more conspicuous the better as far as I am concerned. If you look at the photo in the post it is noticeable that the indicator on the right is brighter, even in the low quality phone camera. In reality, it looks much brighter to the naked eye.

Which leads me to the next project - a high mount rear brake light, with around 25 high output red LED's that when activated, just scream STOP!

Lights don't always mean that you will be seen.

Some americans got the entire rear end looking like a christmas tree.
Flashing lights in all kind of colours.
1 of the "Globeriders" got it on his BMW GS.

I don't think it will help a lot, at least not over here.
It would be better to take away the drivers license of people older than 70 years.

hey JMo,

i've been looking for that front turn signal mod process of yours, but i didn't found it. Is there a link you can provide me? Or is that too easy for explaining it? =P

I've learned the hard way by a fall/drop, they "easily" got broken and i want to fix them your way. The turning signals in the back are protected by my luggage rack, so no need to fix them there.

thanks in advance!

Hi Tetsuo - it's pretty straightforward really - you simply disconnect the wires to the side lights (you won't have side/parking lights anymore, but it doesn't really matter as the headlight is on low beam anyway when the engine is running)...

You then disconnect the wires to the front indicators, and join them to the respective side light wires - you'll need to fit new connectors or bullets, as the connectors are different as I recall; or simply soldier the wires and use heat-shrink as I did, since the rubber bulb holders for the side lights just pop in and out of the headlight surround anyway.

Then replace the sidelight bulbs with orange ones, and you're done!
