Rim upgrade?

Was thinking of upgrading my rims to something like excel. Is it worth it?What are the standard spokes and hubs of the tenere like?Must i just suck it in and go for complete wheels or will just rims be ok?

Well ya probably gotta ask yourself by replacing just the rims - what is it going to achieve?
weight loss? - probably not much that you'll notice.
strength? - yes you might loose some strength.
By replacing both wheels inc. hubs.... yes, you'll get a weight saving...........BUT!
The standard rim/hub set-up on the tenere has been made very strong to handle being loaded up and hitting rough/rocky roads, but of course with strength comes a bit more weight with these wheels. So! if your touring around it would be better to have reliable wheels than worrying about the weight and looks of them..... IMO!.

Mate, it all depends on what your doing... like if you where going to compete in a race like JMo well then yes you'd do it, otherwise if you have got cash burning a hole in your pocket..... I take donations

If you do replace the wheels how much do you want for your old ones?
I wouldn't mind a spare set to have knobbies fitted to them

cheers
Reg.

The stock wheels are very strong, and I'd say perfect for the bike (I did 23,000 miles on mine in the US, and they stayed as true as a true thing)...

However, if you want to have a wider choice of rear tyres, lacing up an 18 rear rim might be a good idea.

Personally I'd not bother just changing the rims (for all the reason Regie points out) - the cost, unless you can do it yourself, really outweighs any discernible benefit...

Of course if you wanted to upgrade the forks to a WP front end, I so happen to have a very tasty set of [nearly new] wheels for sale - my spares from the rally bike - 18" x 2.50 rear Talon cush-drive and a 21" x 1.6 front - both with Excel rims and Breaking Wave discs. 650 the pair with discs and sprocket.

Of course shipping to Cape Town might cost more than the wheels themselves... but it's an option...

I noticed that Talon are doing a slightly cheaper set up these days called T2 or T3 but I guess these may just be for enduro bikes

Yes, I believe they are bike specific for enduro/MX bikes - CRFs, WRs, KTMs etc and only run their basic hubs (no cush-drive)... good value though, might get some for my XR400!

I've just noticed a crack in the front rim of about 2cm
right next to the big dent I got from a little jump in Morocco.
Seems to me they're not so strong
I guess these rims can't be welded so I will have to look for a (stronger) replacement for my Africa trip, any idea's?
Can I keep the original front hub and disc's?
While I'm at it I will also order some stainless steel spokes.

Just found exactly what I need, at one of my 'ahum' favourite companies, touratech:

luckily I have enough time... to wait for delivery.

Have found the stock rim hopeless. My second front rim also has a dent so have ordered an Excel rim.
