2000 mile review

Had me an XT660x for nearly 4 months now, Second hand, but only 1000 on the clock when I got it, so was hopefully 'nicely' run in for me.
Now that it's 3000 miles old, I think I can write us a small review.
I Was originaly interested in buying an XT after hiring an XT500 in Kefolonia, and was probably aiming for something like the XT-R, But couldn't help myself when I saw the XT660X.
I did notice some jerkyness when I first took the bike for a testride. So when I got home looked for reviews and information. Finding the XT660.com site I realised there were issues with the bike but seemingly for most there was a cure.
But mostly I found people just saying that they love their XT660 bikes. Come rain or shine, mud or snow, the XT is the way to go.

SOLD.

MY MODS SO FAR

.Made one of kevs fuel adjusters and an 02 eliminator.
Having not yet talked my mate into letting me stick it on the DYNO, I just lowered the temp by using the adjuster by 1degC (2degC was mentioned, but I have stock filter for the moment so just adjusted it a little). I unwound a fair bit of the tape on the loom so that the joins were well hidden if I wanted to removed the mods.
.Put washers in the Forks.
At first I did put the amount of washers in to make the same difference as the fork spacer mod. I did this thinking it would maybe make the bike more stable. But I am only a little 9 stone. 5'10, but light. The bike was not very nice to ride. The forks did feel alot firmer and so I did think about dropping the forks through the clamps abit, but settled for less washers in the end. I think about half the original amount.
.Spacer under chainguide to raise it up a bit and help protect swingarm.
Having seen some photos of bits missing out of peoples swingarms I looked at mine. My chain seems tight enough but there are very small marks on the swingarm, probably caused when I slow down and the chain goes slack at the top. A polite note that this is something I thought of, and take no responsibilty if anyone else does it.
.I bent the clutch lever, don't ask, but the replacement one I recieved had more of a bend in it. I actually prefer this. It still works the clutch fully, but is easier on my hand.
.Snokel, in the bin.
.Chopped the bottom off the rear mudgaurd and moved the number plate right up.
.Raised the CO setting by 5 to 31? Only because initially my thought was to raise it by 10 but 36 sounded too high.
I have no way of knowing if the Guy before me had changed the setting and have not got round to trying it at the recommended, I think, 18.
The bike seems to run fine.
Well like I said, the bike had 1000 miles on it when I got it, nicely run in,... Playtime.

Once I'd got used to the idea of not changing down to overtake and got used to using tipteos at the lights I was fine.
The riding position is much more comfy than my previous bike a gs500f, where I was wrapped around the tank. The bike is nice and TALL so you can see everything in front of that silly car in front of that silly car in front.
Me missus/coPilot gives riding position the thumbs up too. Although we both think I'm a gonna have to sort the seat out. Gel inserts maybe? It's fine for an hour or so, but after then it just seems abit hard.
I haven't ventured off tarmac yet, but there is no need to avoid all the slightly raised drain covers and potholes in the road and drifts over all the speed bumps around here, two up aswell.
The exhaust can covers look abit odd, maybe, but I haven't melted anyones trousers yet
The brakes are good, to me atleast, as all my previous bikes were quite old. And handling? is more than fun. It's not that I get the back end out round bends or do and knee down action, it's just fun.
High front mudgaurd scores less than 100% when raining and although I've only swallowed a few bits of grit but there are some options with different mudgards if I can be bothered.
Paint has got slight signs of trouble on the left side engine case. Have been recommended a product to spray on to protect from salt and shyt from our winter roads. Aparently only needs one good coat, we'll see.
Starts fine, first time, everytime. As it should really, it's new. But the keyswitch got abit reluctant, so lots of WD40 stuff. seems fine now. The weatherflap doesn't close but I haven't tried to get it moving again.

I would like to take this bike to spain for a few weeks next year, so I think I'm going to need..
.A slightly bigger windshield, because it can get slightly blustery on main roads. You can use the spongy chinrest on the handlebars to it's full potential to get away from the wind. Although you do look like a bit of a nutter I'm not sure I want to travel 2 or 3 weeks sat like that!
.A topbox and a frame to help support soft panniers. I don't want rigid ones.
.Avon Distanzias. You never know when I might want to explore, just a little.
.some longer rear footrests or maybe some DIY extentions?. The original ones are quite short.

Overal this bike gets a big 9/10 without mods. and 10/10 with fuel mod, eliminator, handful of washers, comfier chinrest and a small spacer for chaingaurd.
well that's my bit for now.
