Hi guys, I am slowly making the bike look how I want it to look (have probably spent more time tinkering with it than riding it, bloody rain!), and have across something that I don't understand...

In between the bike wiring loom and the indicator relay there is what looks like to be some sort of extender wire with a large heatshtinked component on it, which looks like a resistor or capacitor. The offending wire is about 10cm long, and has official Yamaha plugs on either end. One end plugging into the relay, the other into the wiring loom.

I'm just wondering what this is really, as I am 99.99% sure it is not on the wiring diagram in the service manual, see the attachment. I have circled in blue where I think it should be, and there is clearly nothing there.

Just wondering what it is really!

And when I eventually get around to fitting a LED indicator relay, should I plug this in too or remove it?

I will get one tomorrow as it is bed time now, but for now I have attatched a diagram.

It doesn't look homemade, I think it has been brought from somewhere. I assume then that it is not fitted as standard?

I just can't figure out what it is, the bike had standard indicators so I don't think it's some crazy resistor to reduce flash rate or anything like that.

That's definitely not a standard loom attachment. You will need to cut open that loom, so we can see what it is.

I think I have figured out what it is:

A diode, as described in the wiring instructions for the alarm that was fitted to my bike when it was purchased by original owner:

"On many machines the indicators have the effect of powering other
circuits of the machine if the indicator switch is positioned to the left or
right during alarm operation.
To check for this, with the ignition turned off, apply 12v to an indicator
feed and switch the indicator to that side, check the other functions of the
machine (e.g. headlight, horn, or fuel pump) to see if they are operational.
If any other system on the machine is working an inline diode (as supplied
with the kit) must be installed in the indicator relay ignition switched input
wire or the output wire from the indicator relay to the indicator switch.
Ensure the indicators work normally when operated. If they do not the
diode has most probably been installed in reverse."

So it seems a diode has been fitted for the correct functioning of the alarm.

Hopefully this will help any other confused XT660'ers in the future!
