525 sprockets...
It's Chain & sprocket time.. So I'm looking at changing the XTR to 525 sprockets & chain..
After doing a bit of checking sprocket dimentions it seems that the Yamaha TDM850 525 sprockets will fit the XT660... "R6 engine sprocket" Just a long shot but dose anyone know for sure if they will fit... And yes I do know I can buy a 525 kit from the other side of the planet... But they are not in the gear ratio I run.. (14 or 15 / 48)

Do u know if this will also fit the z? I got the Otr 525 kit well impressed but have been looking to try other ratios

On a correctly matched sprocket and chain setup there is very little, if any side play, so the chain is always pulled inline from the front to the rear sprocket, which crucially means there is minimal, or no lateral load on the side plates. If there is excessive side play (even a millimetre) the chain is going to wander round the sprockets and the driven front sprocket will end up pulling the chain back at an angle, rather than inline with the teeth. This will ultimately yank the chain about and put extra lateral pressure on the side plates, which they are not designed to take. In turn the riveted ends of the pins will suffer undue stress and could potentially fail with disastrous consequences. Use of a split link with this setup would almost certainly give rise to impending disaster! I would not recommend the use of 520 sprockets with a 525 chain. OTR do a range of sizes of 525 sprocket for the XT in all the sizes anyone could possibly want. Rears go from 44-48 and fronts from 14-16, which gives a huge range of possible final drive ratios to choose from.

Interesting point there too. I'm sure u are right but to the average man like me, who has no technical knowledge, and if the **** hits the wall, cannot replace parts that easily, the just in case scenario is best.
Like u said the 660 is not a high performance machine ( which is one of the reasons I like it). However, if your running the gear ratio different to the manufacturers specifications then you are beginning to push the boundaries of the engine's limitations and therefore increasing the risk of failure or at least reducing the service interval of various parts. Of course, conversely the opposite can be true for example the replacement interval of the rear wheel Cush drive rubbers can be dramatically increased by using a 525 sprocket and chain set up in my experience. I am currently stuck with the following dilemma, I have a 525 chain and sprocket kit installed, with 15 teeth on front and 48 on rear, which is okay but during my weekend off-road excursions is frankly not low enough. ( I do ride Mostly road during the week for work but obviously speed and performance are of no concern, just been able to transport myself and my considerably, very heavy tool set around, slowly but surely is what I wanted and have been satisfied with). So back to the 525 issue for me, I have a new 18 inch wheel rim now and for sure my current sprocket sizes will not enable me to ride some of the muddy, steep descents that I want to. (Despite some masters telling me you need training and the courage to ride faster, with all due respect, they realllllly don't know me, like I said, I cannot afford two bikes along with all my kids). So eventually, what I want is a very low gear ratio for my tenere without damaging my swingarm! So here I am considering what ratio I should get. |

for the reasons you out lined... just wish some one made a 51 tooth rear.. you can get 51 tooth sprocket blanks in 520 & 525 but are alloy I would rather have a steel sprocket... blanks you have to bore the centre & put bolt holes in.. I have a Rekluse Auto clutch fitted which dose make slow tight trails & river crossings very easy...

Have u put the rear brake on your handlebars? (I'm on my third brake lever now).
Did you order the tdm sprocket? I want a 14 on the front actually considering a 13 but scared I'll ruin my swingarm. Never done a full on river crossing what tyres are u running. |

The Rekluse EXP unit has the Auto aswell as still retaining the full manual
clutch.... Rekluse don't make a XT660 unit..but the WR450 unit drops straight in... I have a thread on here of the install etc.... Have not ordered the TDM sprockets as yet... still looking at options.. tyres.. I run Shinko 700 front & rear... are a 50/50 tyre... I don't do alot of mud.... Anything firm to hard they are good also good on the road...

Would love the rekluse set up but they cost a fortune. I've got shinko 244 at the moment way cheaper than tkc80 less than half the price and great quality performance wise. They tend to lose their colour a bit.
