Had a test ride on a 660 today, absolutely loved it.
This was a used 2010 model. It was easy to ride, power delivery was sweet, plenty of oomph for overtakes and soon climbed to over a ton. Pulls well from low revs and even better when dropping a gear or two.
I was considering the 1200, but now I feel that the 660 has all I need.
Can anyone tell me what differences there might be between 2010 and todays bikes? I''ve seen the history link but that only goes upto 2007.

I got a 2009 660 Tenere last summer. Fantastic bike, very pleased with it (exept for the size of the bloody thing, I`m only 5ft 8, check out my thread!!) If you go onto the Yamaha website www.yamaha-motor.eu you can compare models and both the 2013 and 2010 are listed. As far as I can see its just the clutch, rear suspension and ground clearance that they list as changed. Hope this gives you a few pointers.

Tried to chase down some new old 10,11 bikes. All seem to have gone hereabouts. Spoke to Duncan at Wigan Yamaha and did a deal on a new, 13, XT660Z. Collecting it next Saturday. Can't wait.
Thinking of getting hand guards and defenders, main stand and Datatag fitted before I collect. Sump guard and panniers can wait 'till I need them.
Roll on Saturday. Need to start planning some new routes now.

Unless they are giving a very good discount on the Yamaha handguards (as you're buying the bike from them) I would probably suggest holding fire and looking at the alternatives, Barkbusters for example, as they are cheaper and offer much better weather protection (especially with Storm plastics). There's nothing wrong with the Yamaha ones, can't fault them for crash/drop protection, I had them for four years (there was nothing else available back in 2008). Changed to Barkbusters in the autumn, and with the benefit of hindsight, I wish I'd had them from the outset (or rather my hands do!)

If your heart's set on Yamaha ones, I know a nice chap who's got a used pair with deflectors at a very reasonable discounted price!

I bought a 2009 R about 6 months ago. The previous owner must have been an old lady because it only had "1800" km on the clock.
You would swear it was brand new.

Anyway - point I am making is that I cannot tell the current version and mine apart.

BTW John I am 5 '6" and my feet dangle in the air.

Well I said goodbye to my Speed Triple and picked up my new XT660Z. I must say that I am really pleased with the XT.
First scare was when I left the dealer with half a tank of petrol, 5 miles later it had dropped to one bar. Panicked,dived into a petrol station and filled up. Just managed to get 13 litres in? Did another 60 miles before the first bar went out. Something to workout and get used to.
Spent the weekend pottering about the Peak District, mostly single tracks roads. Did venture up one road that petered out into a dirt track. Wasn't ready for that, so back tracked away from that one.
The 4k rpm limit is a bit of a pain whilst running in, could really do with another k or 2, maybe for less miles to first service.
The bike has been brilliant, easy to ride, once onboard, and I've really enjoyed riding at a slower pace along some fab roads feeling chilled and taking in the scenery. Time to plan my next rideout.

I sold my Sprint ST to get a smaller, slower, more practical bike (had a few months with a BMW 650GS before settling on the XTR) and I can agree 100% with your feelings here. One third of the power, half the top speed, twice the fun, and your licence is a lot safer.

I picked mine up from the dealer and checked the fuel. I could hear plenty sloshing about in the tank, and the fuel light wasn't on (no gauge on the R), so I set off home assuming I would get about half way before I needed to fill up. Immediately I left the dealer, the fuel light came on, and I had no idea how many miles I had in the tank. It was 25 miles before a filling station came along, and it took 13+ litres, so I was very close to dry. Riding a new-to-me bike, on unfamiliar roads, and with serious fuel panic - not the best way to start a relationship.

I can't see myself ever going back to a sports or semi-sports bike.
