Looking at buying an XT660X, need help
Hi people, looking at getting an XTX (2004 - 2008) but when I read reviews (which arent indeath really) I see there are alot of negatives, also MCN's review isnt great.
I would be using the bike as a everyday bike with a few 500mile journeys a year and cant find the personal user reviews that actually matter to me, good or bad. I would like to know about this surgie fuel injection that MCN talk about They say 90mph is all you should expect is this true (is it capable to stick to 90mph costantly for long periods of time) What is the average MPG for a hooligan rider lol Also general things like How reliable is it servicing - is it easy to do yourself and what is the intervals (is there any big services needed at certain points) when do the valves need doing and is this easy how is it for comfort Any feedback or further info is apperciated and your personal oppinions would be greatful/helpful in helping me decide in buying one. If it helps my last 2 bikes were an R6 and KTM 640 R6 = good long distance, rubbish round town KTM = fun round town and to and from work, not sure on long distance reliability. I can comment from the saddle of a Tenere:
Top speed - 100+ (just) & with the wind behind! 90 cruising - Can be done, just hold it open, but strong head winds can be entertaining. Reliability - Brilliant. Protect your reg'/rect' though. Self Servicing - Easy. If you know your way around a spanner. Economy - As low as 40mpg if you cane it and as mich as 60mph if you plod. The surging can be ironed out - depends on what year the bike is. Check out the fixes on this forum. I guess it's a bit like the KTM but less harsh. Go and get yourself a test ride. but do try the Tenere too!! Good Luck.

Hi im ace's Brother (slightly shorter brother) and we are both looking to get one.
We like to have the same bikes, can you guess what my last bikes were ------------ lol When you say it can be iron'd out for the surging, how is this done and how much does it cost, As for the tenere, I tried to get on one of these but being only 5ft 5 I had no chance, the KTM was a struggle and I do like the SUPERmoto thanks for your reply Last edited by hagland2431; 28-01-12 at 18:54. Hi there, we have a fix for the surging so don't worry, and let me explain why does the bike surge, well Yamaha built a single cylinder bike with a very restricted air box and air intake in general, the way to stop the bike surging is by allowing more air into the a/f mixture and for that there is a procedure on the bike's clock that allows you to alter the co1. Also we like to remove the snorkel which is situated on top of the airbox and the ultimate way is to fit a Kev Mod which was designed by Kev our in-house mechanic expert. Also fitting a stage 2 DNA filter opens the air box even more and give thge bike a substantial hp kick. But click on my first signature line to find out all about these tricks and by the time you've finished reading your confidence will be reassured. Thankyou very much captmoto, looks like lots to read though, i have to say this at least, the backup, help, feedback and mods available is amazing even if its not a great bike but im sure it is.
Is there anyone in brighton that has an xt660x that me and my bro hagland2431 can get a better look at one? many thanks to all so far for all the help, but if there is anyone who can give me there personal opinion still would be helpful. |

Longest ive ever done was 300miles in a day, which was quiet taxing but if youve come from an R6/KTM 640 this should feel like a sofa. The surging as captmoto has explained is due to the air box being very restrictive and the fuelling not just being 100%. Some peopel dont even notice it, others do. Solutions, change the CO2 on the bike, remove snorkel, change standard air filter to performance, change air box side panel for Stg 2 air filter, Kev fuel mod, performance exhaust cans, PC3/5 and dyno time. You dont have to do all of these but each help reduce the surging felt. At standard the bike can do an indicated 105mph, which is really 100mph as the speedo reads 5 mph out. I went 1 tooth up on the front, along with stg 1 and 2 filter + a set of cans and could sit at 80mph no bother all day. Others say they can sit at 80-90mph all day but i found the vibes just tooo much. The best ive got was 78mpg which was sitting at 65mph for a full tank. Twisting the throttle fully ive seen as low as 45mpg and some really shredded tyres. Over 3 1/2 years i had two electrical faults, one was a corrded kill switch wire under the tank and the other was the side stand switch just gave up the ghost. (Bike did have around 40k miles when both of these happened) The service book says every 6k miles, with the vavles every 12k miles. As the engine is pretty open with no fairing panels servicing is easy. Never done the valves myself, mechanic did say they are in a fiddly location but nothing impossible like on crotch rockets. Other infor. I had an XTR for 3 1/2 years and put on nearly 40k miles on the bike (bike had 45k miles when sold) used it for commuting 40 miles a day and a good old thrashing at the weekends. I used mine for a couple of off roading days and a far few week/2 week tours. Best way to find out what the bike is like is take one out for a test ride.

i came from a R1 to the Xt660, which is what l should have bought 1st, but my mate convinced me to my 1st road bike.. Hated the road bike as it gave me trouble on the right hand, pins and needles etc
I bought a SM XT 2009 and absolutely love it...great bike to ride to work everyday also. i put a set of MTC cans on, and a high flow air filter, and blocked the AIS to stop the popping.. i have to say after these simple mods the bike goes even better... honestly l dont regret it and l reckon its the best bike lve ever had for the road... mind u ive had on the road 2 x DT175s, XL250RF, XR250RG, NX650 Dominator, and a R1.' Go for it and ignore the writeup from magazines about the negative things they say about the bike. i did the same thing and really thought twice about buying one and l am glad l didnt take notice of the writeups. |

MCN damn near put me off buying my xtr,(old reviews also rubbished my 1990 suz vx800 which was a magic machine)....I'll leave our technical gurus to talk you through the details of squeezing the last ounce of performance outa these things but..mine's totally stock,will hold 80+ all day,,sips petrol,,and,,,no bad day can wipe the grin off my face when I've been out for a ride,,,done 250 miles a day 2 days on the trot and no niggles about comfort whatsoever,,,can't speak for everyone but I'm seriously hooked on mine..

Thanks guys, those few comments has made me happy.
I like that they have long service intervals and the valves are 12k apart not to mention the MPG These benefits I would take over the KTMs power for my use's, pitty these XTX's are so heavy Peace out |
