XTX won't start --> Rattling sound from starter relay area!?

Hello people!

I've just fitted a new PCIII USB and when I wanted to start the engine, the starter motor quitted and now I only hear a rattling sound when I try to start it. The display lights up and there is no error code on the display.

I think the rattling is coming from the starter relay, as you can feel the thing vibrating when I push the start button and you hear the rattling coming from there. Does anyone know if this is a faulty starter relay or something else? I suppose it has nothing to do with the newly fitted PCIII but haven't tried starting it with the PCIII detached yet. Or could it still be the PCIII is doing something wrong with the starting system?

Any suggestions what the problem might be?

Thanx in advance!
Jeroen

Sounds like the battery is flat. It may need replacing, How old is the bike?

Mine did the same the other week, turned over the piston once then got a fluttering sound from under the right hand side panel.
Charged the battery for a week, it started once, but was flat again next time I started it.
Replacement battery cured it.

Hi RedDog,
Thanx for your reply!

Actually I rode the bike a week ago for 45 minutes without any problems. I use an Optimate4 to keep the battery in shape. It has never taken a lot of time to recharge it. So I think it is fine.

You mention a sound that came from the right hand side of the bike. I assume you mean right hand side when sitting on the bike? My rattling is coming from the left hand side (when seated).

Hi,
Yes the noise seemed to come from the right as you sit on the bike.
Does your engine turn over ? or does it just make the rattling noise?

I think that relays can arc across the contacts and weld themselves open (or closed) if the battery voltage is too low, so when I heard the noise I did not keep the button pressed very long .
Also had no error codes and the lights all came on with the key just not enough juice to turn over the engine.

Mine was on an Optimate and started the bike no problem over the winter. Kept outside in minus temps and always started.
It seemed to die really quickly. The new battery spins the engine over a lot faster now.

You could just have unplugged something when fitting the PC3, but I don't know what would still light up the dash and not start the engine with the relay chattering.

Hope you get it sorted.

The engine and starting motor are not turning over at all. There's only the rattling noise coming from the area around the left side panel.

But maybe you're right. I'll check if the battery is operating correctly. Should know this soon enough if I attach the optimate!
