I think there is maybe 1 or 2 who have made there own bash plate.

The best stuff to make it from it aluminmum as its light and strong enough to resist a good few knocks here and there. As for thickness, depends on what you want, i would say 2mm + would be needed to make sure it just doesnt split or puncture if your going off roading.

The only problem with aluminmum is getting someone to weld it, as your average welder at home normally only does steel.

I know your a student (or is it just young?? cant remember) meaning your strapped for cash but you can spend alot of time faffing about to make it when a good 50+ could be spent waiting for a good second hand one. (I spent 2 weekends making my own rack for panniers, which i would have bought for 150 or so)

cheers maxwell,

designing and making shouldt really be a huge problem. im at university doing a mechanical engineering degree so i can easily get materials etc for next to nothing! wich is allwyas handy!!

i was just wondering if people had huge problems with the moutings etc, and how they got around it.

i suppose i should use what im paying for really and go ask my tutors!! lol
i know one of them at least loves his bikes so i might be in there!

ive decided that im going for it and making my own sump guard!

the designs are in and materials are easily obtainable from my department.
the only thing i am unsure about is how the normal sump guards fix onto the bike. What do you fix it to and is it fixed directly on or are there brackets involved?

any help would be fab!

cheers guys and girls!

i cant remember where it was, but somewhere on here a guy asked the same question a while ago. someone else then very kindly posted some pics of the mounting brackets and explained exactly where they attached to. i'm sure if you do a search it'll turn up.

I would strongly advise that if fabricating it from ally you use no thinner than 4mm.
