Servicing a Exhaust Can
Depending on the packing one needs to service aftermarket exhaust cans every few years. Fran can correct me but I thing these cans are 3 years old, I have done 25000kms 15600 miles with them. Fran what mileage did you do with them?

1/ Remove cans making sure they are not hot. 2/ Exam the link pipes, clamps & cans for damage. 3/ I needed a drilling machine, a 4mm stainless steel drill bit, 4mm rivets & a rivet gun. 4/ Mark the end caps to the can & only do one can at a time to avoid mixing up all the parts. 5/ Place a rubber mat or something soft under the can while drilling all the rivets out. 6/Using a broom handle push the handle through the can until it rests against the baffle, then gently knock the broom on the floor while holding the can this will push out the end plate. To remove the other side use a rubber or plastic hammer. 7/ As you can see my packing is totally burnt out & needed to be done. 8/ Remove old packing & blow out the can & baffle, examine the baffle & inner parts for damage. 9/ Cut the new packing to size. 10/ Now wrap the new packing tight as possible, I mean real tight. Then tape the packing with packing tape. The tape will burn off so don't worry about it. The packing needs to be very tight when placed in the can if it is to last. 11/ Refit the end plates one at a time fitting all rivets in their hole before riveting the can together. 12 Now time for a quick polish & they look like new again. They now have a different beat note & are a bit quieter. They will get a little quieter as they are used. I could not wait for the weekend so did this last night. Superb job there Kev, I have edited your post with the mileage I think, I remember I had done with them which is about 17'000. One can say those cans have been around the world

excellent job Kev!
What about standard cans? Would I damage the catalist if open them? Are they too complicated inside with a lot of tubes and stuff? |
