Yamaha XTR to XTX convertion - another different way!

So, what you have is XTR and you wish to convert it to XTX, but with minimal costs. After months of thinking and reading I have found this great solution for 2004-2006 model.

Costs: 250€

-Rear wheel rim (size 4,25/17 or 4,5/17). If you buy rim made for some other motorcycle be very careful with spoke hole directions and number of holes (150€)
-Front spoke set, part number 1D2-F5104-00 (45€)
-Centering rims (30€)
-Coloring or eloxing rim (25€)

Here is how it is done, step by step:

1.

This is a picture of my XTR. Dont mind the colour, I have XTX plastics. I like red

2.

Take off both of your wheels and remove tyres. First measure and write down distance of center of rim from side of hub, so you will know where your rim has to be when you will build it!

Remove rubber band and unscrew all nipels, than take out all spokes, but be careful to put same sizes of spokes together, so you dont have extra work sorting them again

3.
This is where my big trick comes: use XTR rear rim as your XTX front rim! Do not be troubled! It fits perfectly, just a little different way of spoke directions!

Of course rear XTR (2.75 inch) rim is not as wide as XTX (3,50 inch), but I solved it elegant with tyre size 110/70/17. I've contacted Dunlop about rim sizes and this is what they have respond:

Quote:
Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your motorcycle tire questions. For the tire size 110/70-17, the optimum wheel width is 3.00". The acceptable wheel width range is 2.50" - 3.50". Therefore, a 110/70-17 tire size can be mounted on a 2.75 x 17" wheel.
I chose Dunlop Qualifier 110/70/17 and 160/60/17.

4.
From here on you will see black hubs. Those are the same XTR hubs, I just decided to color them black.
I recommend you to take off brake disc for easyer wheel building.
I used my new XTX front spoke set and my old XTR rear rim, which is my front rim now.

5.
Than build XTX wheel with new rear rim and old spoke set the same way XTR was built. They fit to my new rim perfectly. Did not try with original XTX rim tho. Should check hole directions first to be sure, but I think there should be no problems.

6.
When you have your wheels ready, take them to nearest bicycle service and ask them to center them for you. Find those written distances, they will need that. Note that spokes must be tightened 3 Nm.

7.
Now all you have to do is install brake discs, buy some tyres, mount your wheels and ride. This is how my XTR looks like now.

Remove front mud guard and move brake line to the outside of the front fork, remove chain guard.

Thats it =) Enjoy!

I strongly recommend you use Kev's Front fork spacer to stiffen and lift front a little.
