Making the XTX (or XTR) lighter

The ol' 660 is a fantastic bike but I reckon it could be made a whole lot better by shedding a bit of weight. After all, it weighs about the same as an R1 but it's 2/3 the engine capacity.

So, how about some ideas on how to make it lighter? Here are some of mine to kick things off:
  • After market cans (up to 6kg lighter)
  • Wavy brake discs (??? lighter)
A couple more but depends on riding conditions
  • Remove radiator fan (mine's never ever been on)
  • Remove side-stand
What else?

I could loose 4 stone and leave the bike as it is .

Depends what you want to use the removed weight for. Make it go faster or easier off road.

To get it faster take the high bars and screen off and go for clip ons, sit on the back of the seat be like a sports bike rider, and change the gearing to get better top end speed.

For off road remove all the extras, Lights indicators etc as well as the bits you were removing.

But if sreious off road is the game, trade it in for a WR450F for trail riding. Yamaha's Enduro model.

If other makes are possible Beta Alp is basically a Trials bike with a tank and seat.

Cannot remember the maunfacturer but if Ultralight is the game I have seem a mountain Bike and a BMX bike with small petrol engines in.

As for me I still need to loose 4 stone before I can complain about the bike...

If you remove the fan you might as well set a match to it mate, I tell you.

The bike main weight comes from the engine. They have made the engine very heavy obviously for reliability reasons, but you can shed weight by putting after market cans, removing pillion pegs (they are well heavy too) replace the handlebars with renthal alluminum ones.

Disk brakes will not signify a lot of weight reductions and the wavy discs are really just a gimmick, at least for our bikes they are a waste of time (I know cause I've tried them, they last a lot less i.e. they wear quicker and they don't improve braking at all)

I knew i had seen a thread about this before....
have a reda through here mate http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?...ht=weight,that will give you the weight of parts you can take off and what you may gain.
And i agree the weight of the rider might be the biggest loss you can make

I know the weight of the rider is significant, however all 'weight' isn't the same you know. The worst place to have weight is on the unsprung part of the bike. The next worst is high up, the next worst is low down, and the least worst is on the rider. The main thing about weight on the rider is that it's movable, so it can be used to advantage... sometimes!

The worst place for weight is on the un-sprung parts of the bike, then high on the bike, then low down on the bike..?????

Damn, lets just sell the bike, walk and be done with it...lol...
Choppin a few things here and there off the bike ain't gonna make a massive noticable difference to our lives...

Wow, I think I must be doing something wrong! What with all the extras that I'm putting on my Tenere it is getting heavier by the day!..... and I haven't got the crash bars or the centrestand yet!
We've got a scrap metal merchants down the road and when I get all the bits on I'll fill it with fuel and take it to the weighbridge for a laugh / scare!

Don't take a dump for a couple of days and eat like a pig on the day you go to weigh her too.
