Footpegs

If you want bigger footpegs for offroad use, you can put WR ribbed footpegs on your Tenere. They should fit easily and they are wider, so you have more grip standing while riding offroad. This advice was given by a testrider from Yamaha Holland. Greetz, Hans.

Do you have a link or a picture to this report (I'm sure I saw it somewhere, but can't find it!) - this is something I would like to do to my bike...

Hey Jenny! Congrats on your Tenere, have lots of fun! No troubles with the height of the bike? Before the first Teneres were delivered, I did a testride organized by my Yamaha dealer: a spokesman of Yamaha was breaking in a new Tenere for press testrides and he let me have for a couple of hours to test it. On that occasion he told me that the footpegs of the WR also fit right on the Tenere. They're wider and more ribbed(better when riding offroad, standing). I was so impressed after the testride I instantly ordered the new Tenere, right after the ride! Since I took delivery of the bike on june 13th, I already covered about 4500km: it's a great bike, an allround allroad, I love it! Greetz, Hans.

Thanks Hans - I know what you mean, I'd seen pictures of the new Tenere and thought it was really well thought out, but once I sat on one I was sold! I have to confess I've not actually ridden one yet, but then I've never test-ridden a bike before I bought it - I guess I always go for the rare or obscure models that don-t have demos?!

However, I'm used to riding high bikes (I have a rallye spec XR650R too), but I must say, the Ten does feel very tall when you sit on it solo - I guess the spring preload is quite high to allow for luggage and a pillion?

Hopefully it will bed in and soften up with a few miles?

I'm planning on getting some (WR450 version) Pivot Pegz for the Ten' - but will wait until I get to the US to save a few s...

It is a tall bike and now after 5500 miles it's still the same hight, so I don't think so. There are lowering bones you can buy to lower it though if you feel it's too high for you.

It's not so much the overall hight, rather when I sat on it solo, the suspension didn't seem to sag much? I guess it has quite a firm spring for two-up/luggage, so I'll see how it goes solo and perhaps consider a slightly softer spring in the future?

Of course I'm comparing it to my current bike - I've got my XR650R set up pretty plush, and it has done 17,500 miles now, so it's well broken in...

I think he exaggerated... I just bought some WR Pivot Pegz (a like for like replacement for standard WR pegs) and they won't fit on without a couple of mods - however, they are pretty straightforward:

The width of the WR peg where it pivots in the frame is 30mm while the Tenere is about 25/26mm. I simply ground down the tubular part (where the spring sits) of the new peg a few mill until it fitted in the U-bracket on the frame - this still leaves plenty of room for the spring.

I fitted the pegs and they sort of looked ok, but I realised they were drooping and pitched forward. Basically the block of the footpeg is a little too short to touch the U-bracket on the Tenere, so the peg droops down and forward. I remedied this by drilling a small hole in the flat face of the footpeg block about 8mm deep, and inserted a 5mm dome-head allen bolt as a spacer between the peg and the U-bracket - this was slightly too thick, but can be easily filed down until the peg sits level and true. Result!

ps. I'd like to say I tapped the footpeg block, inserted a helicoil and can therefore remove/replace the 5mm allen bolt as required. In reality, I drilled a 4.5mm hole and bashed the ba*tard in with a hammer until it sat flush... x

pps. I would also like to add that grinding and hammering a 100 set of footpegs is not for the fait hearted! And the stainless steel they are made of is super strong - I blunted two drill bits!

Hope that helps you all!

Yep, I'll weld some extensions to the original pegs instead!

Please put some photos of the footpegs right now. I have a XT660R, but I'm searching also for a wider and more offroad footpegs than the original ones.

I have also heared that the WR450 footpegs could fit the XT660R... that could be great!
